The Bottom Line:
nakamichi is about sonic excellence and not about dazzling features.
i bought my nak two years ago secondhand in a package with an audiocontrol three.1 preamp.
the seller had them in his sound competition car. he warned me about the skippiness with scratched cds and the fact that upon ejection cds don't eject all the way out.
the sound quality is great. it's better than an alpine unit that i had for years. i do not use any of the sound controls and have them all flat. i use the preamp for all sound adjustments and compensasions.
the unit gets really hot inside because the cd are very warm when ejected. as another reviewer mentioned removal and attachment of the faceplate is tricky sometimes, especially in the dark, but with all the fumbling and pushing it is still clicks in perfect. the layout of buttons could be a little better, but since i rarely use them i don't care.
it is wierd if i'm listening to the last tracks of cd and want to select the first that the player does not allow to get to first track by clicking forward, it stops on the last track, i have to track backward(i hope that made sense).
the display is sometimes hard to see if it is sunny and bright.
i also want to say that the rest on the system play a huge role in sound reproduction. although my system is dated it still sounds very clean and loud.
With all mentioned above i still feel that this unit is out performing other units that i've used.
