Workable with effort

bynhdrjon Mar 17, 2010
Pros Great Design, Good Value
Cons Difficult Setup, Poorly Quality
Recommended it? Yes
Good For: Men
I had been interested in these but poor reviews and high cost prevented me from buying a pair until I bough a returned pair on ebay.

Having some knowledge of optics I dismantled them and with considerable effort I have gotten them to work fairly well.  My pair seem to have been used by a frustrated tech to vent emotion so its overall quality may be even worse than usual.

Overall the design is sound and the parts seem to be of good quality.  They are all mounted either on threaded mounts or with screws with glop holding them in posiiton.  I found that as I adjusted them they slowly drifted so it takes some time and several interations even after you figure out what to do.  However knowing this, I left them alone far a few days before I locked thing back down using clear nail polish.

Mine had chipped prisms.  I covered the chips with black paint and stray light is no longer noticable and they work well.  Mine had a load of epoxy gunk on the prism housings but this turned out to be inconsequential.

The prism assmebles can be fine adjusted by adjusting screws,  The four set screws orient the prism assemblies when the otehr four screws are snugged up to pull the housing onto their points.  They are painted over so the screwdirver has to be a good fit to the slot and I did chew up some heads.

When the two sides are aligned and resaonable close to center the chromatic aberration becomes much less noticable.  I also pushed the objectives as far back inot their housings as they would go to  assure distant focus

Mine has a lot of foriegn matter including a screw rattling loose which jammed the suspension.  I had to adjust the prism assembly to bring it inot balance which improved the stabilization.  I had to wonder if the factory gotranything right or the last person to work on it just got mad.

This is not something I want to do again but if you can get a pair at a decent price, know a bit about optics and how to align them, the stuff is there to make a decent stabilized binocular from them.
