The Bottom Line:
$1500 and worth every penny.
I wouldn't like to think of life without this lens.
I am a freelance photographer who does a good amount of newspaper work. Of all my lenses, this is definately the on I rely on most often. The zoom really saves time switching lenses. My everyday camera bag consists of this lens, a 80-200mm 2.8, a 50mm macro and 2 camera bodies. It's especially good for shooting on SLR digital cameras that crop in-camera.
It's comparatively a pretty lightweight zoom. The focus control is seperate from the zoom control unlike some of Nikon's earier zoom models (as in the earlier 80-200mm zooms). The one ring focus and zoom control wasn't too great because the push/pull and twisting focus would become unconfortable after prolonged use. Also after lots of use the zoom ring would slip out of place with just gavity.
It's very precise, sharp and bright...which is no surprise due to the fact that it's Nikon.
Go to you nearest camera store and give it a spin. You'll start thinking about different ways to get $1500.
