A useful zoom for budget photographers

byddqq May 12, 2000
Pros lightweight, small, good optics among competitors
Cons No IF, bad manual focus
Recommended it? Yes
The Nikkor 24-50mm zoom has two versions: D or earlier non-D. They have identical optics. One can easily tell the difference by looking at the focus distance mark on the lens. The non-D version has a plastic window as shown in the picture of epinion page, while the D version doesn't.
This lens covers a very useful focal range at a acceptable price(around $350). I picked mine mainly because Nikon lacks a 20-35mm/3.5-4.5 and 24-50 is the one closest. Well, the 20-35/2.8D certainly rocks but its price allows you buy 4 of those. The 24-50 range is unique on the 35mm market today. It has determined this lens stay more likely with advanced users who appreciate the range, while most people will choose zooms like 28-70, 28-105 or 24-120.
The 24-50 takes 62mm filters, a standard size shared by many other Nikkors. No IF, that means the front barrel rotates whenever it tracks focus, a pain for using polarizer. The front barrel retreats back to the lens body when zoomed at 35mm, and goes forward when zooming to either 24mm end or 50mm end. Building quality is proportional to its price: cheap. Very plastic. It does have a manual focus ring but it's not meant to be manually focused! The focus ring on my 24-50 is stiff, never seen on any other nikon lens I have.
The optical performance is good, though. A typical sharp Nikon lens. Goes soft in corners. Slightly warm tone. Good flare control.
The small size makes it perfect as a standard zoom on the camera. A good alternative to 28-70. 24 end is a lot more useful compared with 70mm end.
