First film SLR - great camera for the price
Pros
It's an SLR and can be found cheap, professional level tool.
Cons
advanced features require a databack. No built in flash, requires hotshoe flash.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
These used to be $1000 back in 1995 now you can get them dirt cheap. They are worth every penny
I picked this up used from a professional portrait photographer while she was giving a presentation at my camera club. She had recently switched to all digital equipment. I had never had an SLR of any kind and for the price, I could not pass it up.
I paid $150 for the N90s body, a nikon 35-70 f2.8 lens and an SB-22 speedlight.
I have used the camera for landscape nad event photography and all i can say is that if you have never used an SLR, then you are missing out on a lot.
Just the responsiveness alone is enough to justify the purchase, but you also get a wide range film to use and lenses. I recently purchased A Tamron 28-200mm lens and it works perfectly with it.
What it does NOT have:
Built in flash, so purchase of an external is a necessity.
Mirror lockup - I have taken some long exposures in some landscape work(4-10 sec exposure) and have not had any problems.
Some good stuff:
A fast motor drive - up to 4 frames per second
High shutter speed - 1/8000 sec
Easy to use controls.
Miscellaneous:
AF-D lenses work best as the body has no automated way of contolling the aperture. An AF-G/AF-S will work, nut you must use shutter or full auto mode. However, you can use the program shift mode to adjust the aperture/shutter combination. Not perfect, but a workaround.
I like the fact that the AF-D lenses I buy for the N90s will work on the D50 i plan to buy in the next couple of months.
I highly recommend this as a good backup film body to anyone who wants something to go with the digital body.
