The Bottom Line:
An amazing camera, and can be purchased used at a very attractive price; and like all the Nikons I know, uses a variety of Nikon lenses produced over many years.
Many years back on a photo (and fishing) excursion to Yellowstone I only had my manual focus SLRs. While wonderful shots came from them, I missed some serious award winning chances without fast auto-focus. It got me thinking I needed to add to the bag, and being an avid reader of Outdoor Photographer I was very familiar with the results of the greatest Nikons of the day when in the hands of greats like Art Wolfe and (the late) Galen Rowell. Yes, they also used the F4 and newer Nikons as they came out (I wonder if Nikon gives the pros the best stuff for free???). Anyway, it isn't just the equipment but the eye and talent of the photographer, so putting an N90s in the hands of someone who takes snapshots, not photographs, may not get the desired results. But take the time to learn the craft, and the N90s should shine. I wanted a sightly lighter weight camera than the F4 or F5 (and something easier on the price!). I have not been disappointed in the N90s in any way from the very first frame. I see others speaking of its weight and saying it's rather heavy.....I must smile.....I have, and still use quite often, an original Canon F1 with the Motordrive MF (that drive alone takes 10AA batteries), it is a very heavy tank! But it is also a long time, trusted true friend in the photo world. Yes, I often hit the nature trail with just the N90s and a couple of versatile zooms to keep weight down (and even keep a P&S digital on my hip as a quick second choice). I will say I'm sorry to see the value of the N90s on the used market plummeting recently, it is no fault of the camera's quality; I guess so many folks are going digital. The N90s was a $1000 body at introduction, and now excellent ones can be obtained for less than $100. I added the MB10 grip to it which makes for vertical compostion and shutter firing much easier. All in all, this is a great camera, now to get enough time to go out and use it!
