The Bottom Line:
If you have to have wide angle capabilities, this is the single lens to own.
Nikon put this lens out with the D1 for a reason,--to retain some wide angle coverage for the D1 crowd who had to factor in a 1.5X magnification factor in all their lenses. This lens, when used in the F5, is incredible with tremendous capability in angle of coverage as well as retaining sharpness and most importantly, superior short range focus. If you want a super point and shoot lens that covers it all, you can't do better than this. Keep in mind that it will weigh you down. It's not tiny by any means. It keeps in the tradition of most professional lenses by having the 77mm filter size. This is handy but you really don't want to slap a polarizing filter on this at 17mm. Although you don't vignette, you can create a highly artificial look when only part of that broad sky is darkened. (Sometimes, nothing is better!)
