Cartridges rule!

Pros Fast boot time
Cons Becoming dated, many titles cartoony in nature
Recommended it? Yes
Yes, the Dreamcast has better graphics and the Playstation has 100x as many games, but N64 offers the only cartridge system out there. Some have written reviews bashing the cartridge format decision over the more sleek and "advanced" CD formats of Playstation, Dreamcast, and soon to be Playstation 2 (Late Summer 2000). But let me tell you something, yes your games might be cheaper on CD, but how long do you spend waiting for the game to load? It seems like forever!!!

Cartridge based games (N64) cost more because the games are stored on EPROM chips contained with in each cartridge. The memory is much more expensive than the plastic and aluminum combination of CD ROMs & DVDs. However, when you put a cartridge in your system, all the information is immediately accessible, unlike CD ROMs that must spin and load the game information into the player?s memory every time a new game is played.

I?d imagine if you add up all the extra time you spend waiting to play games with CD ROM media, and multiply that time by a small hourly rate (whatever your time is worth to you), you?d easily explain away the extra cost of N64 games.

Yes, the CD ROM drives and memory caching in the newer systems (Playstation 2, etc.) will drastically reduce waiting time required to play. But for now, the N64 remains a good value for the money!
