N64-The Best Game System for Younger Kids

Pros Easy to use, better variety of games for ages 10 and younger
Cons As any game system, takes some time to learn the controllers
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  The Nintendo 64 Game System will bring hours of fun to the entire family!
We bought our Nintendo 64 Game System 3 years ago, when it was starting to do down in price. Waiting had paid off, and we picked up the regular, black N64 Machine with only ONE controller for $99.99 at Toys R' Us here in Wisconsin.

Why did I want to purchase this one? For one thing, I had done my homework on the others, and I found that Playstation had a large variety of violent games, and not a whole lot to be desired by my 4 year old at the time. I was looking for something cute, maybe a racing game or something fun with not a lot of thought process involved for such little minds.

When we bought the System, we were pleasantly surprised that a game did indeed come with it and we didn't have to shell out another $60 for a game! It was Super Mario 64 and my daughter and husband both loved playing it together!

The graphics of N64 is what caught my attention in the store- I had never seen such bright colors, heard such "real" sounds, and felt like I was right there in the game! Coming from the old days of Atari, my Space Invaders never looked like this, and even when my dad bought me a NIntendo Sytem in the early 90's, my Legend of Zelda was NOTHING in comparison to what you can imagine and play with now!

Since we have bought N64, we have also had to buy other accessories which I feel are important to talk about because some people are unaware of some of the "hidden costs" behind game consoles such as the N64.

First, we needed to buy another game controller which will run you about $29.99- and come in a wide variety of colors. Most N64 Systems now come with TWO controllers and allow you to even pick the color of your Game System- back then,we only had the choice of the regular "black" console.
To keep the costs down of controllers, we found what is called a "SharkPad" which you can find at Best Buy Stores. This was on sale for $9.99 when we bought it and serves as the exact type of controller, it's just a different shape, and comes in clear or other colors. We use this for our third controller when we all play the racing games.

Second, there is something called a "tremor" or "rumble" pack that without it will leave you in the dark on certain games. For example, we have the "tremor" pack, and in both Zelda games, you need it to find hidden holes where you can find some cool treasures in helping you on your quest. Now granted, most games only use this as a "bonus" feature, but I feel it is quite underhanded of the Nintendo Industry to make people shell out MORE money for a handfull of games that may use it. We also have Diddy Kong Racing, in which the "tremor" pack vibrates when you have hit something, or another car, so like I said, it's really just a bonus.
Our "tremor" pack cost us around $40, so indeed it is an expensive bonus too!

Third, we have recently recieved this item, called an "Expansion" pack. This is for games that needed additional chips, etc.. that plugs into the back of your machine for games like Donkey Kong 64 and the Legend of Zelda- Mask of Majora. Now we were lucky and it came with our Donkey Kong 64 Game, but if you didn't buy that game, you are out of luck and will have to buy it seperately. An Expansion Pack will cost you around $40- I suggest buying the DK 64 Game for around the same cost and make the most of your money!

In conclusion, I have to say that N64 has a wonderful variety for the younger kids. Such games like Yoshi's Story, Pokemon Snap, and Diddy Kong Racing are fun and light games which don't take alot to figure out. Yoshi's world is almost sickly cute, and the tune will get stuck in your hear, while Pokemon Snap is all about taking pictures of these fun creatures and exploring all the different worlds. This game system is great for adults as well, and produces the best adventure games I have ever had the privelege of playing! I am currently playing The Legend of Zelda-Majora's Mask- and it is quite challenging and a lot of fun!

On a scale from 1-10, 10 being the best, I would have to give the Game Sytem itself a 10, and the accessories a 9, just make sure you watch for the hidden costs and shop around for the best deal!

This would make a great gift for any child or adult who wants to have some fun, as long as it isn't used as a babysitter or subsitute for a day in the park on a sunny day- so use it wisely! Enjoy the N64 Game System- trust me, you won't regret it!
