The Bottom Line:
Stay away from this phone, Nokia makes better phones. Poor reception and poor battery life.
The company I work for was looking for new Cellular Phones to replace our old phones. We have been using AT&T wireless for our old phones so they stuck with them to handle the service for the new phones. At the time AT&T offered the best coverage area in Oklahoma. Since we are a computer service, and we cover the entire State of Oklahoma and the surrounding states we needed the widest coverage we could get.
The phone that AT&T was offering for this rate plan was the Nokia 5160 . This phone is fairly small under 6" long and weighs approximately 6 oz., and it a lot of features that make it an attractive choice for most people. Some of the features include a large backlit screen, one inch fixed antenna and a one touch button for accessing the option menu. Once you press the menu button it brings you to a menu to make your choice from the list of features.
Phone book is the first feature that you come to and this gives you a choice of three options. You can search for a phone number or add a new phone number and edit your phone list. The phone numbers are added to your list and arranged by the name assigned to the phone number. There is space to hold up to 100 phone numbers.
Keyguard is the second feature and with this feature you can lockout the keypad so you can't accidentally dial a number or shut the phone off, you must deactivate the keyguard.
My tones is the next feature you come to, when you select this option it allows you to change the ring setting for incoming calls.
Warning and Game Tones this feature allows you to control the warning, confirmation and game tones.
Clock Settings use this feature to setup the clock that is displayed on the LCD screen at all times the phone is on.
Games there are simple games included with the phone, Memory, Snake and Logic.
Settings this allows you to setup calling card calls and auto redial feature and also emergency key select.
Call Log this logs all missed calls.
Messages this displays available messaging services.
As you can tell by the long list of features, this is a very versatile phone.
Although the actual coverage area is determined by the service plan you decide to purchase from the service provider. I have experienced poor reception within a small distance from where I am calling to. My guess is because this is a dual band and that allows it to automatically switch from Digital to Analog when you leave the Digital coverage area.
Speaking of the Digital and Analog feature, this is indicated on the LCD screen by the presence of a capital D on the top left portion of the screen, which stands for Digital service is available in that area. The other indicators on the LCD screen are the clock in the upper right corner. The service provider is centered on the line below the clock. There are two other indicators which are located to the left of the Digital service indicator and that is the keypad lock indicator and that would look just like a key. The other indicator which would be for the voice mail alert, which looks like a small reel to reel tape. The final three indicators on the LCD screen are the signal strength and that it indicated by a segmented line which extends from the bottom of the screen to the top on the left hand side and the battery life indicator which also is indicated by a segmented line extending from the bottom to the top of the LCD screen on the right hand side of the LCD screen. The final indicator is the menu button label, which you will find the button on the keypad just below the label on the screen.
Battery Life:
This is a very important topic, Nokia who made the phone say the battery should last from 2-3 hours of talk time and 4-8 days standby time. These times are only for the standard battery. I have yet to be able to talk for even close to 2 hours on a normal charge with standard battery, and I have yet to be able to leave it on for more than one day with having to charge it the next morning. So I do know if this is typical or not but it has been my experience with this phone.
I am going to list the features of this phone:
Auto Redial,Clock with alarm, dialed, received, miss calls, Keypad lock, Onscreen battery indicator, numeric paging capability, one touch credit card calling, Phone book, Ring tones, Message service, Voicemail capability, customize face plates
The most popular feature of the Nokia 5160 Phone seems to be the interchangeable face plates, this allows the person who buys the phone, to customize the front of the phone which option face plates. Nokia offers 9 different colors to choose from and there is also a set of college team face plates.
In conclusion, I would not recommend this phone, there are so many other good phones out there. The poor reception and frequent times the phone just shuts itself off, I would look for another phone.
The colors you can choose from, Antiqua Red, Bermuda Blue, Cedar Green, Dolphin Silver, Gecko Green, Gloss Midnight, Plum Red, Shark Silver,
Tango Orange, and the college colors.
