Tiny Mobile Phone, Nokia 8260 : Reviews by a SMALL GIRL and a BIG GUY
Pros
Small and stylish.
Cons
Might be TOO small.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
I myself am very satisfied with this product. BUT I don't recommend this to you, unless...
This is my first personal cell phone in this country. Yes in the US. I was using a Docomo's i-mode compatible cell phone back in Japan. Compared to the cell phones sold in Japan, none of those sold in the US got me until I saw Nokia 8260.
Please don't misunderstand my point. I am NOT saying that US wireless communication technology is worse than Japanese one. As you may know, the physical body size of Japanese people are much smaller than that of American people. So, the much smaller (in dimension) cell phones are common in Japan. The companies are focusing more on down-sizing of cell phones.
BOTTOM LINE OF MY OPINION
Basically, I am very happy with my Nokia 8260. I am more than happy to make this product as a gift, but not for everybody. The following explains why I will not recommend this to everybody, even though I am very much satisfied.
WHEN AND WHY I BOUGHT NOKIA 8620
When I was surfing around the internet with my interest in new cell phone around the last Christmas season, I happened to find Nokia 8260 with a rebate program at http://buy.com . The original price of Nokia 8260 was $199, which is not cheap. But the price offered by Buy.com was $99. Moreover, it comes with $75 rebate from Nokia. Also, AT&T gave me $30 dollar rebate for $29 250min+500min/mo plan So, basically got paid $15 for this gadget. This sounded very nice. I bought this machine even though I have not seen the real machine.
(Note, however, that as of 2/24/01, I have not received any checks from either Nokia or AT&T, though it has been more than 2 months since I mailed in the two rebate forms.)
PROS
There are many nice features to this gadget. The first thing I have to mention is its size. It's VERY light and handy. You don't need extra space in your bag when you travel. Just hide this into your pocket! The lock feature prevents you from hitting keys mistakenly. (You might want to careful not to crash this machine with your whole butt, if you fit this machine in your pants' pocket. This one is that thin and light to everybody's surprise.)
Another neat feature is the vibration. Because I really hate to be interrupted by abrupt phone calls during some important business meetings, and also, I aimed to use this machine for my personal/private use, the vibration was something like the can't-go-without feature. I am so glad that I finally found a very light and small cell phone with vibration.
Some other nice features include a calendar, a decently sophisticated address book, and a calculator. The calendar and the calculator are not very useful for me, since I am usually on the computer which has nicer ones. But if you are frequent traveler, these features will save you some time to open your handheld pc or giant address book.
CONS
Now, it's the time to mention some problems that some people will have.
As I stated above, this gadget is so small that average-size American guys will have some difficulties to hit a single button. I am not physically big even in the Asian standard, so I don't have any problem to get the control over this machine, but many of my male friends had giant problems. They first found this machine extremely neat and loved this. But once they tried to make a couple of calls, they need to go back and forth between the number keys and the clear key, which 1) is annoying, and 2) might cause some serious problem if they will have to make an emergent call.
My friends' general comments are: 1) This machine will make a great gift for a female (with small fingers) and kids. But, not for tall or heavy guys. 2) The down-sized cell phone is great in general. But it doesn't have to be this small in the height from a tall guy's point of view. The wider but thinner one will fit better to their demand, because it can fit in the briefcase better.
Finally, let me compare Nokia 8260 with the i-mode compatible cell phone I was using. I bought Nokia 8260, and love this. But I got some impression that when the new i-mode wave comes to the US, the technology with Nokia 8260 will be nothing fabulous. Unless you are in urgent need of getting the very small cell phone, it might not be a good idea to wait for a few more months.
CONCLUDING REMARKS
Nokia 8260 is definitely small and stylish. There is no doubt. Nevertheless, you have to feel comfortable in controlling your own cell phone, because you will use it on daily basis. If you are a physically big person, you definitely have to check out the actual size of this product to see you can push one single button with ease. It is a wrong idea to buy this product only because it is stylish.
