The definition of function over form :(
Pros
Nice screen, great keyboard, fantastic reception
Cons
Slow, ugly, and cameraless
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Slow, ugly, and cameraless this quad-band world phone features excellent reception and a great way to keep connected from anywhere.
An Introduction
I recently switched my phone service from Alltel to Cellular One and I wanted a phone with a full keyboard for texting and email. This Nokia was cheap, like my plan on CellularOne. So I took it, and being a Nokia, I knew the reception would be good (Nokia phones seem to always have great reception) and the build quality as well (Nokia phones are tough). Both these things have proven true.
An ugly ugly ugly duckling
My only real problem with this phone, other than it's slowness and lack of camera (more on that in a minute), is how hideous it is. It's not just ugly, it's awful. It's a gigantic brick (117 x 70 x 14mm) - certainly not something you can put in your pocket! A gigantic silver chunk of plastic with plasticky keys. EEEWWW... but it was cheap and had all the functionality I wanted (except a camera, which I didn't know :( )! The phone features a full web browser, a nice QWERTY keypad, a big screen, MP3 player (no standard headphone output jack), bluetooth, and also has email and "smartphone" functions for those willing to pay for a smartphone data plan (my carrier charges more for those features than for web access that lets you use webmail)
The user interface
This phone runs Nokia's Series 60 platform, which uses the Symbian OS. It's almost-counter intuitive at times (I'm good with tech and I had a hard time figuring out where the menu was...) but once you're used to it it works very well. The menus take far too long to render and the whole phone is very slow, because this is a low end phone it basically meets the bare minimum processing and memory requirements to run S60. But did I mention it was cheap?
The camera - or lack thereof
This deserves it's own warning because had I known this I'd have never bought it The Nokia e62 does NOT have a camera! Make of that what you will, I just want you to beware...
As a phone
This quad-band GSM world phone features excellent reception and works extremely well. I've had it restart on me twice when it rang but I think that was due to a custom theme I was using. Normally, it's been good and it works very well! Conference calling, texting, everything works great
As an internet device
Slow because it's only EDGE - no 3G data, no WiFi. I recommend installing Opera mini as it compresses graphics in their server to make the web zippy and the screen and keyboard work great! The built in web browser is very good if you're willing to wait for pages to load over EDGE...
Since Cellular One doesn't have 3G, my preference would be to see WiFi support added. Which it is, in the e61i which is it's replacement (they also added a camera). I should have waited a few months but oh well..
PC Sync
Or rather, Mac sync. Nokia has very good iSync support for Mac. Almost all their phones can be supported with free plugins from Nokia's site and this one is supported out of the box. Just pair it with your Mac and add the device in iSync. Perfect.
Charger design
The charger connector is VERY tiny. I broke mine within a few months. I got a new one for free, but you probably won't be so lucky. Handle with EXTREME care.
Other design information
Big, ugly phone has big battery - it lasts a LONG time. Which is great. You can use it heavily as a smartphone all day and have plenty of battery life left! Nokia says 7 hours of talk time or 11 days of standby, and I wouldn't doubt it. However, in real world usage, one or two days will be your normal battery life. Afterall, you wouldn't buy a device like this unless you are looking for the data features!
The screen is 320x240 and is very bright and clear once you turn off the automatic brightness reduction. It does not feature a touchscreen though. This is a very low-end phone. It has a navigation joystick and standard menu buttons to allow you to cycle between available functions. Not fancy iphone-likeness here. You are constantly reminded that this is a low-end phone. The screen is recessed to prevent scratches, though I always recommend static cling anti-scratch film if you care about this factor.
Sadly, it uses a miniSD card which is hard to find for storage - though I just ordered a 2GB microSD with a miniSD adapter for only $11 shipped, so it's not impossible
The phone is 850/900/1800/1900 GSM with EDGE data support. It has no 3G data capability or WiFi.
The keyboard is very easy to use, easy to press and it works well.
Because someone asked, there is a voice command function. I have never used this function on any phone as I've found them to be completely pointless. Dialing is so much easier and with a little practice can easily be done without looking. There is Bluetooth so hands-free support is present in case it's the law in your area. There is also a wired headset jack.
Final thoughts
This phone is slow, ugly, and cameraless. It's also a fantastic value for a very good phone. Consider your needs and wants carefully before purchasing, but I can recommend it to the right person.
