Pros
At 199 Euro you get a lot of things.
Cons
Short battery life if used intensively.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Get it to have a full feature phone-pda. Avoid it if you are looking for a trendy nice looking plain phone
MAIN FEATURES - COMES WITH:
It is a Series 60 Phone. That is a Symbian system which means LOTS OF SOFTWARE and very few (if any) bugs. Actually every single piece of software written for any 60's phone will run also on the N-Gage (except those softs that require a camera).
A series 60 phone is much more than a phone. It can run programs like most PDAs. It can MULTITASK programs just like windows.
It has a excellent SpeakerPhone. This is used for the king of mobiles hands free mode! No other mobile sounds as good as the N-Gage when in hands free mode.
It also comes with a nice pair of headphones. Headphones can be used to voicedial numbers, stereo MP3, AAC and radio listening.
It comes with a free game and 30MB MMC card (30Mb when you erase the free game - anyway it is free to download at the nokia site).
Is it a Gaming Platform? Actually current hacked N-Gage games may run also on some other 60's phones. Anyway only the N-Gage gives a 8 direction Pad and a more than decent speaker.
But in the end I would't think that gaming platform is a accurate description since it is pretty limitative.
It comes also with a USB cable for fast access to the memory card from PC.
MAIN FEATURES - PROGRAMS TO INSTALL ON IT:
1) Phonesecure - 9euro - at http://www.wildpalm.co.uk/ - This brilliant soft is worth every penny. If you lose your phone and somebody finds it the phonesecure
application will lock the phone and send you a SMS with the phonenumber of the retriever ;-) then you just call and ask back for your phone... or go to the police station ;-D - Trust me, they stole me a phone once. I wouldn't anywhere without phonesecure. The guys running the company are extremely kind and gave me another license for free after I initially bought it for the 7650.
2) GoBoy - free - Run Bameboy and Gameboy colour roms on N-Gage. http://www.wildpalm.co.uk/
3) AgileMessenger - FREE!!! - Turns your mobile into a portable messenger. Connects to almost any messenger service like AOL, ICQ, MSN, YAHOO etc... If this program was on sale I would have bought it. http://www.agilemobile.com/
4) FExplorer - FREE!! - Good file exploring program on the series 60's.... free.
THINGS TO DO:
My GSM provider (Wind-italy) offers GPRS connection where you pay-for-byte usage. I can have instant messenger applications running for ages free of charge :-) and when I write/receive I pay a ridicolous sum. So, wherever you live, you can look for a flat rate GPRS plan (and use it also like a mobile modem for any PC with bluetooth connectivity) OR use a plan like mine and have a personal messenger at almost no cost. Wind also offers a flat-rate montly internet access for 19Euro.
Get a BIG MMC card and Nokia Media Converter (from Nokia developer site). You can watch movies on the phone. Just take your favoutite DivX or your collection of MP3 with you! just be careful, it looks like the phone might dislike some big sized MMC like 512Mb...look on the forums for tested MMCs. Also you can fill it up with downloadable games, programs or MP3/AAC
CONS
1) When you write SMS or look for a name in the addressbook or do anything serious people still thinks you're playing... which othervise it is true most of the time.
2) Audio for non NOKIA embedded applications is limited to mono. This implies that you will be running only the embedded apps. This is probably a software limitation imposed by Nokia to avoid hacking of the device. Possibly someone will hack it :-) and there will be also third party stereo applications.
3) Speaking without headphones or hands free speakerphone is unconfortable and "funny" (to be polite). It looks like you are holding a taco on your hear (look on google for "n-gage taco talking")
4) Battery life is LIMITED. I advice to buy at least another battery. Use nokia originals and stay away from cheap imports. There are reported cases of batteries exploding.
5) Changing the MMC card (see other reviews)
PROS
1 to 10) WOW THIS IS NOT A BARGAIN IT IS A STEAL!!! It comes now priced at 199Euros. You get a Phone, a PDA, a MP3 Player, a USB drive, a Radio, a mobile Instant Messenger, a Voice Recorder, a Game Deck, a Gameboy Emulator, a GPRS modem, a Photo Viewer (take out the MMC from the camera and watch pictures on the N-gage).
11) N-gage QD sucks. The newly announced N-gage QD lacks the Radio, the Mp3 Player and the USB connection. It has a nicer shape (stop).
