Nokia BH-800-BK Bluetooth Headset

Bluetooth headsets have come a long way, from the older bulkier and complicated models to the new generation tiny and very easy to use headsets. Motorola has been at the forefront of Bluetooth headset technology along with Jabra. These days there are several companies making Bluetooth headsets and prices range from anywhere between $30 to $150. Nokia a new entrant in Bluetooth headset technology (1 year). Nokia launched the BH-700 claiming to be the smallest Bluetooth headset and priced at $109 and recently launched an even smaller model the BH-800 for $179, a very high price for a Bluetooth headsets. Online stores offer this headset for as low as $100. Also when you think of Bluetooth headsets, the first things that comes to mind is the stylish Motorola and Jabra headsets and not Nokia. So why would anyone pay so much for this headset ? Read on…

In the box:

1. BH-800 Headset
2. Ear loop
3. Microfibre Pouch
4. Home and Car Chargers
5. User manual
6. Lanyard
The Lanyard is a nice touch, the headset being so small, it is great to have a lanyard for both easy access and safe storage. The included pouch seems cheap for such a hefty price. There is absolutely no padding. The ear loop is very stiff and sturdy, the downside is it cannot be adjusted to the ear, but since the ear piece fits into the ear, the loop is not necessary, but might be useful while working out or during active work. The user manual is very small, but covers every aspect of the headset, but surprisingly it does not include a list of what is included in the box. The inclusion of the car charger along with the wall charger is great, no need to get a separate charger for the car.

Specifications:

The first thing you realize is that the headset is very small and light weight. The headset looks good in coffee black. There is another color available – silver white. Here are the specs:
Physical dimensions – 1.6 x 0.71 x .35 inches
Weight – 0.32 ounces
Technology – Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) and Handset 1.1 profiles
Talk time – Upto 6 hours
Standby time – Upto 160 hours
Operating temp – 5F to 130F
Battery type – Rechargeable 80 mAh Li Polymer

Compared to the BH-700 dimensions at 1.8 x 0.7 x 0.4 and 0.35 ounces, the BH-800 is slightly smaller and 0.03 ounces lighter.

Physical attributes:

The headset has a brushed coffee black finish with shiny spines on either side. The shiny spines are of the same color as the rest of the headset. The shiny spines can be easily scratched, a mere light scratch with the nail can leave a visible indentation on it, but the unit is so small, it can never be noticed while wearing it. The earpiece protrudes out of the body and seems very big, only because of the small body of the headset. The ear piece has a rubber ring over it and is extremely comfortable wearing it. It is like a universal fit… it fits different ear sizes comfortably. The main body has a square chrome button on top. This is a multi-function button, can be used for call answer/end button, redial and voice dialing depending the number of times it is pressed. The left spine has a rocker volume button which also acts as a mute. The right spine has a tiny hole for the charger . This is hole is smaller than the regular Nokia phone charging hole and the wall charger has a small adapter cable to fit into it. The top of the unit has the power button, very tiny, can be depressed only with your nail. Beside that is a small but very bright multi-colored LED – glows in red, green and blue. On the opposite side of the unit is a microphone hole. The microphone is very sensitive. Beside the ear piece there is a small bump with a hole for the ear loop. The included Lanyard attaches to the headset between the ear piece & main body, and holds very firmly there is no way it can detach by itself.

Using the BH-800:

Pairing process is extremely simple, power on the headset – green LED blinks to show it is powered on, then get the phone to find the Bluetooth device and enter the passcode 0000 for pairing. Once the headset is paired, the blinking green LED turns blue. That's it, the passcode need not be entered again. The unit pairs with 8 other devices, and of course, with one phone at a time. Once paired, using it is just like any other BT headset, calls can be answered or ended with the chrome button. The rocker volume control is a bit flimsy and unresponsive unless pushed to the ends and kind of difficult to use while wearing it. But the volume is surprisingly loud for such a small unit. The fact that the earpiece is worn in the ear helps. Speech during calls is clear within 4 to 5 meters from the phone further than that, it gets choppy. But in a large room with a clear line of sight, it does good upto 8 mts. (needless to say, being a Bluetooth, a clear line of sight is not necessary, since it works on encrypted 2.4 GHz radio frequency). The unit is so small and the microphone is quite far away from the mouth and hence in open spaces the speech can be a tiny bit choppy and unclear on the other side. But while sitting in a closed area like a car or a room without breeze, it is very clear. There is no function to increase or decrease the sensitivity of the mic. Not sure if this headset can be used to listen to MP3s from the cell phone, but technically it should be possible, but I did not try it out. The inbuilt noise–cancelling algorithm works good, eliminates most noises and keeps the speech clear. The upto 6 hours of talk time and 160 hours of standby time is very impressive especially for such a small unit. The Battery is a lithium polymer and cannot be user replaced. Not sure if it can be professionally replaced at Nokia authorized dealers. Like all batteries, this battery will deteriorate over a period of time and being non-replaceable – just hope it will give a long useful battery life.

Pros:

1. Amazingly small size – never fails to get compliments
2. Good audio quality from ear piece and mic.
3. Included Lanyard can be very useful to carry this tiny headset around
4. Comfortable to wear for extended periods of time
5. long talk and standby time

Cons:
1. Can get a bit choppy at times.
2. Rocker volume control is a joke. Requires 2 hands to use it.
3. The redial function works only with Nokia phones.
4. The shiny spines can scratch easily.
5. Non-replaceable battery
6. Price – way too expensive.
