Kameleon Remote Control
Pros
Variable screen views. Can program individual keys and download new factory codes over phone.
Cons
It doesn't program easily for every device. Lots of time spent to resolve issues.
Recommended it?
Yes
It has a high degree of flexibility. However, I had 5 devices to program, and only two programmed seemlessly from the manufacturer's code. One other sort-of programmed from that code, but I had to use the Kameleon's "learn" function to add three keys that did not come across.
The other two devices, and older Hi8 VCR, and a brand new Yamaha audiovisual receiver, could not initially be programmed at all. Eventually, after much communication with Universal Electronics (Kameleon's maker), we were able to identify two manufacturer's codes that they downloaded into the Kameleon's memory over the phone line. That took three tries on separate days, but it finally worked.
So in the end, the device acted as advertised, but it was a lot of work to get there. I just counted, and in addition to the phone calls, I've exchanged 32 e-mails over almost 3 months to get all the bugs worked out.
Having not had experience with other units, I cannot say if they would have been better or worse, given the challenges I through at it.
