The Bottom Line:
Offers all the casual photographer could want. A lot of cool features at a very reasonable price. A solid point and shoot.
I am a college student and wanted a camera that I could fit in my pocket to take to the football games, so my first priority in looking for a camera was a slim body, which is the first thing about the Olympus FE-230 that caught my eye. It is not thinnest camera of its kind, but unless you want to carry the camera in your wallet the FE-230 is a perfect pocket fit (only .65" thick). Despite its small size, the buttons and scroll wheel are surprisingly easy to use. Also, the 7.1 MP resolution offers more than enough flexibility in picture size and quality, and the standard 3x optical zoom is nice to have.
This is a very easy to use point-and-shoot camera that does almost all of the picture taking for you. If you can press a button then you can take great pictures with this camera. My favorite part of the camera is the scene mode which allows you take pictures for 19 preset picture environments (landscape, sunset, fireworks, up close, sport, etc...). All the necessary settings and adjustments are pre-programmed to allow you to take any picture you want. I was able to take pretty amazing pictures of the local firework shows this past 4th of July. Another really cool feature is the picture and sound setting which records 4 seconds of sound after the picture is taken. The Digital Image Stabilization function of this camera eliminates the blurriness from shaky hands. This is one of the features that really sets this camera apart from others.
A few aspects of the camera that I don't like are the settings for picture quality, which allow you to choose appropriate settings for internet use, or print use, but don't allow you to change mega pixel value directly, so there are limited picture quality options. Also, the lag time after taking a picture can be a little too long. If taking pictures in scene mode, it will often take a couple seconds to process the picture. There is also a longer-than-usual shutter delay which can be frustrating at times.
There are numerous other useful features that this camera has to offer that you can find at any supplier website. If you are looking for an easy to use camera that takes high quality pictures then look no further.
