3x Better Than A 3.2mp Camera?...No!

Pros Image Stabilization, 32mb Internal Memory, Large LCD Screen, Multiple Picture Modes.
Cons Grainy Picture Quality, ISO goes to 6400 (Too High), Poor With Dark Colors.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Being that 10 mega pixels will be an influential feature in a Digital Camera, I would not recommend the Stylus 1000 as you will be disappointed in the image quality.
The Olympus Stylus 1000 is the 10mp leader of the "Stylus" line of Cameras, however it's performance is far from "in the lead".

A few years ago my Father received an Olympus Stylus 300 (3.2mp Camera) for Christmas. The pictures it took were so beautiful, that when it came time for me to desire my own Digital Camera I decided to stick with the Olympus Stylus line because I knew of their reputation and that I would have something that delivered a quality photograph. When I saw that the "Stylus" line was up to 10mp (Stylus 1000), I was very excited and put that one on my Christmas list for 2006.

I opened it Christmas morning and set it up right away so I could start taking pictures with it. I took some pictures outside, and inside of people as well as just scenery. When I loaded the pictures to my computer I was expecting them to be three times better than my Fathers camera (10mp versus 3.2mp) and was pretty anxious to see the quality. The first thing I noticed was that they were almost as good, not better in any way. I'm sorry, but for a 10mp camera to be almost as good as a 3.2mp camera is not acceptable to me.

Right away I started playing with the different settings, trying Portrait, Candle Light, Indoor, Available Light, etc..., and the majority of the settings I tried made the graininess of the pictures come out worse. I even tried with Red-Eye On/Off, Stabilization On/Off, and none of that helped either. Then I played with the ISO settings trying "Auto" first, then 100, 200, etc..., and when I used ISO 100 it did help, but it still wasn't outstandingly better than my Fathers 3.2mp Camera, but at least it was on the same page instead of almost as good. Now my feelings are for a 10mp camera to be "as" good as a 3.2mp still is not something I was willing to settle for.

The "Outside In Broad Daylight" pictures that it took were OK, but I am under the impression that many cheaper, fewer mega pixel cameras would be good in those situations as well.

The "Con" I mentioned about the ISO setting going too high is because you are really only able to utilize ISO 100 or 200 with this particular camera, the grain gets noticeably worse at 400, and 800, 1600, 3200, & 6400 are wasted ISO settings with the Stylus 1000.

Unless you are at the ISO of 100 or 200 anything you take a picture of that has black in it, or dark colors like furniture made from dark wood comes out so speckled it renders your picture unusable. So due to this camera being extremely limited in what it is good for I decided to return it to try for something else.
