Masterful sound

Pros Exceptional sound, feature rich
Cons lack of optical output
Recommended it? Yes
I have but one drawback to this system. Which was shortly changed the next model year. That is a lack of an optical output. This would allow compatibility with the few (and I do mean FEW) DTS encoded music cd's on the market. However, in the two and a half years I've owned the CD player, that's the only complaint I've ever had.

My first experience with Onkyo's products came about 10 years ago. I babysat for a family in my church. In their basement, they had an aging Onkyo component system. When questioned, the father said that he kept it around because "nothing else sounds quite so good." Not believing him, I requested a sample. He played a sample of Mozart where nearly every voice from the choir could be heard uniquely. Needless to say, I was converted. As far as I know, their stereo is still running smooth. Not many companies claim that kind of reliability.

Fast forward to 1997. My room mate decided to surprise me with a CD player for my birthday and at the recommendation of the guy at Circuit City, I ended up with this CD player. At the time, I had neither the speakers or receiver to truly appreciate the player's ability to produce every level of sound encoded on the disk. Now, I do.

When I finally moved into my new apartment, and set my home theater up properly, I gave each component a run through, to test their merits. So, I took one of my favorite CD's, Massive Attacks Blue Lines, see my review and put it in the player. One song in particular features a wonderful string section, so I let it play through, the clarity was exceptional. So, I flipped the disk to my DVD player and ran it through the optical connection and let the Receiver (a Sony ES-50) do the CD player's job of conversion from the digital to analog sound. There was no doubt in my mind, that the sound was more pure coming from the analog running from my CD player.

Nice features included on the player:

1. Fully featured remote control. Only one thing here was left out, no power button. But, I'll live.

2. 6 rather than 5 discs, I know it's a minor difference, but I like to see storage/technology pushed to the proper limits. Plus it allows for you to change up to 5 cd's while a single disk is playing.

3. If you like to make mixed tapes or just listen to a set of songs, this will allow up to 40 tracks on a program. That's several hours to sit back and let something elsee do all the work.
