I own a Onkyo DX-C380 in one of my current home theater hook-ups, and I also I bought one for my grandparent's home theater system. Ever since I was introduced to Onkyo, I fell in love with their quality and prices. The first time that I bought this player for myself, it was an open box item for $129. Then, I bought a new one for my grandparents... I was able to bargain, and get the price down to around $130+tax. Anyway, after a long time of usage, here's what I found:
Price:
I've seen the Onkyo DX-C380 retailing for around $150 these days. This is a budget CD player, but it sure doesn't sound like one. It has many features that you'd want, disc exchange, 6-disc carousel, intro scan, random play, etc... It has most features that you would want from a CD player... Plus it also has an optical out... So you can get cleaner sound by using a TOSLINK cable. I don't think that the DX-C370 has an optical out, but I actually haven't used that model. Anyway, I found the Onkyo DX-C380 to sound better than some Sony, Kenwood, and Yamaha CD players in the same price range. The Onkyo DX-C380 is one of the best choices in the ~$150 price range. Another great choice that you should consider is the Yamaha CDC-575.
Looks and Styling:
The Onkyo DX-C380 is big... Yet light. Anyway, I don't think that it looks nearly as good as some Yamaha or Sony CD players, but the Onkyo name-plate should attract some eyes to it. However, you don't look at the CD player while you're listening to music, so why should it matter?
Durability:
Even though the Onkyo DX-C380 is actually quite a light weight CD player, it still has a very solid design. Before I bought my latest home theater, I've been using it nearly non-stop. I still use it constantly to this day. It has had no problems at all. It never skipped or anything. I don't actually have a component rack with the home theater that it's in. It sits right on top of a Yamaha RX-V995 receiver. After a long time, both components get very hot, but the Onkyo DX-C380 doesn't skip at all.
Installation:
The Onkyo DX-C380 contains the normal analog outputs. One thing that I like about this CD player is that it also has an optical out. I have my Onkyo DX-C380 connected to my Yamaha RX-V995 via TOSLINK connection. Also, some people connect the Onkyo DX-C380 or other digital CD players with digital coaxial lines. That's always another good option.
Sound:
The Onkyo DX-C380 is one of the best sounding CD players in the price range. I have tried some Sony and Kenwood (The $120 model) players, and they didn't seem to get the kind of sound that the Onkyo DX-C380 had. Sure, the data that is read is all the same, but the components on the inside make it sound like it does. There are also some Denons that are cheap, but they aren't very high quality. Only the more expensive ones offer superior Denon quality. However, the Onkyo DX-C380 delivers the quality that you'd expect from Onkyo. Through the TOSLINK connection, the Onkyo DX-C380 allows for some very smooth and warm sound, also the bass was good.
Ease of Use:
The Onkyo DX-C380 is an easy to use CD player overall. I sometimes control it maually, but I mainly use the remote control. The remote control is very... ugly... But easy to use. I've seen some complicated remotes in the past, but the remote that comes with the Onkyo DX-C380 is anything but complicated. It does look very ugly and cheap, but at least it's still very easy to use. The front panel on the player itself looks ugly, but it very easy to use.
The Verdict:
The Onkyo DX-C380 is a very fine piece of equipment. It offers excellent Onkyo quality, at a very reasonable price. If you can get the Onkyo DX-C380 for less than $150, I'd consider it to be a steal. I can't believe I got this thing for $129, it was just an amazing price. The Onkyo DX-C380 does have a warmer sound than other players in the same price range. If you want to be sure about what you're buying, then buy Onkyo. This thing even has a digital out! Believe me, you'll love the Onkyo DX-C380.
