The Bottom Line:
For sound quality and reliability, there's no better value out there in an AV Receiver. Match it with good speakers, a good center and powered subwoofer, and look out...
When it came time to upgrade my 20-year old Onkyo receiver to something that could be the center of a new home theatre setup, I began my search with Onkyo. My old Onkyo receiver served me flawlessly for 20 years, and would probably have lasted forever. Reliability is key when you're running everything you got through the machine -- CD's, Satellite TV, DVD, VCR, FM,..
Sound quality is what really narrowed the selections, though. I used to think there was little audible difference between high-quality receivers, but after listening to quite a few receivers, the sound of the high-current HK's, Denons, and Onkyos were surprisingly cleaner and richer than all the others.
I was a close choice between HK AVR65 and Onyko TDSX676, but the Onkyo sounded a little better on my favorite music tracks.
The Onkyo's been sitting in my entertainment center (which is luckily very deep to fit this beast)for several months, and I absolutely love it. The 5-Channel stereo is fantastic for both music listening and TV/Movie watching. Wiring it all up and getting it balanced is no simple matter, though. The owners manual could have been a lot more helpful.
