The Bottom Line:
This is a top-grade receiver with great sound and great build quality that is easy and enjoyable to use.
You know you've got a good piece of gear on your hands when the only negative thing you have to say is that the remote control eats batteries. This unit probably represents the single best investment I have ever made in my home theater/audio system.
It appears that some of the other reviewers paid considerably more for their units than I did. I bought my receiver around Christmas 2001 from One Call (onecall.com). I paid $599. They were also offering the unit at an even lower price as part of various packages. The shipping was free, and I received the unit a couple of days later.
Other than having to replace the batteries in the remote control every four months, I haven't had a single problem with this thing. It sounds fantastic, and it automatically detects the format of the input from my DVD player and decodes it appropriately. The build quality is extremely high - the thing weighs half a ton! All of the buttons and switches are solid-feeling. The on-screen display works well, which made set-up a breeze. There are plenty of advanced features for the techno-nerd, but I like the plug-and-play character of this receiver - I was up and running in just a few minutes.
I don't see how anyone could be unhappy with this receiver, and my fellow reviewers all seem to concur. I don't think Onkyo is still manufacturing this model, but if you see one for sale, snap it up!
