An amazing receiver

Pros Great sounding unit. Easy to configure and setup. Tons of ports (allows expansion for years)
Cons Remote sux. Its a universal learning remote but its operation is cumbersome and cludgey.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This is a top end receiver that can be had for a medium range price = KILLER EQUIPMENT AT A KILLER PRICE. Go buy one before they run out!
This is an absolutely amazing receiver. I had been using a Yamaha receiver since 98 but needed to upgrade because I didnt have the right combination of digital inputs and video outputs. I was going to stick with Yamaha, as I think they are great, however the guy at Circuit City turned me on to Onkyo...very glad he did. When I got the unit home and plugged it in to the same speaker and component setup that my Yamaha had been living in I immediately noticed a huge difference... it was like my rear speakers finally came alive!! Plus the sound was more clear and filled the room better. It was like a whole new world on my ears.

There are enough ports in the back of this unit to manage a small TV station. One thing i have discovered that I really like about Onkyo is that all ports are assignable and none are "prelabeled". Thus the back lists Video1 - Video5 (or more?). To me that is easier to work with than memorizing "playstation is in VCR2, while ReplayTV is in SAT/DBS,etc etc". The configuration interface is also very intuitive and logical.

I am using this as a 5.1 receiver and have not used the 7.1 or Zone 2 features. its neat to know they are there however.

This unit has been replaced by the 801, which is pretty much the same but has a network (ethernet) interface for connecting to your home network and streaming mp3 files. This was not an interesting upgrade to me and I was very pleased to buy the 'older' 800 unit at a substantially reduced price. $705 at circuit city (as opposed to $900 for the 801 unit). Unless you really need the network feature (which requires you also run specific onkyo software on a windowsPC) then I recommend you snatch up an 800 series at the discounted price. Its a GREAT VALUE!!
