Excellent Quality and Value

bysddave Aug 11, 2003
Pros Highly configurable. Great, clean sound at all volumes. Phono jack
Cons Bass and treble settings adjust in 2dB increments, not 1dB.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you're serious about home audio quality, this unit is untouched at its price point.
Obviously, this is not an entry level unit. The SR800 has everything (settings, connections and source detection modes) you need for less than $1k. It has taken me a couple weeks of fiddling, but think I've figured out most of the bells and whistles. I have the SR800 blasting through mixed Infinity speakers: SM100 Large Front, Alpha Center, Entra Sub and surrounds. Wow! The SR 800 Pro Logic II setting converts all my two channel sources into 5.1 flawlessly. There are so many user configurable settings that one would be hard pressed to complain they can't tailor the sound of any source to their taste. My system has been calibrated to maximize clarity without being too bright. The factory settings were a bit too bright for me. The system emits pink noise so you can adjust for speaker distance and determine optimum output levels in relation to your sweet spot. You can also set center width and depth adjustments and mess with delay and reverb. You can make the sound anything you want it to be, including "Pure audio" where the source is completely uncolored. You can run everything through the SR800. DVD Audio, Dolby Digital and DTS (and probably THX) sources are all automatically detected. Another nice feature is a phono jack.
