The Bottom Line:
Overall this is an excellent receiver, well worth the money (an investment).
I bought the SR800 around Christmas of 2002. There's a WIDE range of prices out there ($750 - $1000) so do your research. Make sure the seller is an authorized Onkyo reseller otherwise the warranty will be null and void.
The design is very sleak and there's plenty of inputs and a few outputs to handle anything you throw at it. I specifically appreciated the 3 optical ports on the back and extra optical port on the front for home game systems. If you don't have optical capable devices then there's plenty of analog and coax ports too.
I was especially impressed with the on screen guide. Simply plug the receiver into your TV via SVideo port and vwalaa! Every device can be plugged into the receiver and managed with the universal remote. Even cooler was the surround sound settings that enables you to list how far each speaker was from the viewing area. E.g. Center 6 ft, Left and right 6ft, rears 8ft. The receiver then optimizes the surround sound for your room!!
The volume knob is very, how should I say, sensitive. There's a small change in audio volume with each tic of the knob. I appreciated this feature after my last Onkyo DS727 made the audio too loud with a slight turn. There's even a setting that will "cap" the max volume on the reciever in case you have kids. No more blown speakers.
This receiver boasts THX, THX EX, DTS, pretty much every standard you can think of. There are settings for manual and auto identification of the formats depending on what DVD you pop in. Simply hit play and it realizes the type.
I haven't noticed any clipping per se, even at very high volumes.
**Update 10/7/03, I've enjoyed my Onkyo over the last year but have discovered a major flaw. The remote control is a faberge egg. Two days ago the remote dropped the equivalent of maybe 3ft. off the side of my couch. The fall left the remote completely useless. I've dropped my cell phone from heights double that and it keeps ticking. Make sure you get the extended warranty on the remote because it's got a short life!!
