The Bottom Line:
If you are looking for a good buy without breaking the bank, check out this Onkyo receiver. Coming from seperates, it surprised me with it's accuracy and detail.
I recently had to replace an aging Carver stereo preamp and Parasound amplifier in my home stereo set up. I enjoy a two channel set up do not run surround sound. I purchased the unit new for $199 at Circuit City after thorough research on specification comparisons with the other major stereo brands.
I can say that even after a short time listening to the Onkyo, I found that the sound is much more detailed and crisper throughout the audio range. I heard little details and nuances I've never heard before on my other set up. Usually, detailed and crisp means a harsh treble. Not so with this unit, the treble is forward and crisp, but not harsh or fatiguing. The bass is tight and controlled at all but the highest volume levels. The bass cannot be compared to a full seprate system with dedicated amp and pre-amp, as there is some, and I say very little lack of response in the 20-30Hz range. The bass is there, just a few percent shy of being as forceful as the $1000 seprates will allow. I did not intend for the unit to be a high end replacement for the seprates I had, but at $199, even at $250 or so for some of the mail order prices, I am very pleased with how the unit sounds. It also has all of the inputs I needed including a phono jack. Inside of the case were two decent sized 10000uf capacitors for the audio output stage, as well as a huge aluminum heat sink. All of the wiring appeared clean, as did the large transformer. Not a torridal, but seemingly larger than past receiver power supplies I have seen. All of the buttons on the front panel are easy to use, and the remote is straight forward. Go to Onkyo's site and read the specs on this amp, if you are looking for a two channel receiver without breaking the bank that sound really good, check this one out. 2 yr warranty as well. FYI, the speakers I am using are Paradigm Monitor 9v.2 two way towers with Audioquest Jade cables and a standard Sony CD player.
