Oppo Digital DV-980H DVD Player

i bought this unit because i have an older onkyo receiver with no HDMI, but it has 7.1 analog inputs, so i can decode hi-res audio on the Oppo and use the analog outs to send to the Onkyo (remember, digital s/pdifwill not handle high bit rates like 96/24 5.1 streams, so that is not an option for DVD-Audio). this unit also plays SACD, tho i only have a few titles, it's nice to have. both SACD and DVD-Audio will probably disappear, but one can pick up good used deals on ebay for retail releases.so this player has extended the life of my otherwise excellentnon-HDMI onkyo receiver. if you have HDMI none of this willmatter to you.
since the internal DAC's are 192 Hz, they can handle anything that i can throw at it (some DVD-A's are 192/24 stereo, tho generally it's 5.1 96/24 that i want to play).
the setup is pretty straightforward. if you set your speakers to "small", it automatically sends bass to the subwoofer, even if that channel is not on the disc (eg, a 4.0 quad disk). makes a big difference, so be sure to check this if you have small satellite speakers.
video-wise, the Oppo has played every Divx/Xvid file I have thrown at it, generally from DVD-Rs. no problems w/ standard video DVDs.
i cannot comment on the video upscaling, as i have an ancient toshiba 4x3 50" TV using S-Video. the picture looks fine tho. i bought this for audio primarily, but it's as good or better video than my other (samsung) players.
