MOSTLY PROS WITH THIS ONE
Pros
Good Picture and Sound Quality, VCR & DVD Built In
Cons
VCR & DVD Built In (haha), VERY heavy!
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
I would recommend this TV if you are not a frequent mover. Very heavy!
I bought my Panasonic PV-DM2794 27" TV with VCR and DVD combo in April of 2003. The sound and picture quality is adequate, and the DVD player that is built in has never had a problem. However, the built in VCR player has never worked properly.
Built In VCR Problem From The Start
When I first got this TV, I rented a couple of movies in VHS format and discovered that the built in player would not always play the tapes. It would work on some, but it wouldn't work on others. I could not pin point a specific problem with the tapes. These same tapes would play on my son's VCR player.
Since this TV is EXTREMELY heavy (I cannot carry it without help, and even then, it's awkward), it wasn't feasible for me to take it back to where I got it. The rest of the TV seemed to work fine. I quit renting tapes and stuck to DVD only after that.
The Set Up Menu is simple to use, and I was able to quickly scan all my channels and add them (or delete them!). I could adjust the color whenever I had a fussy person over to watch a movie who kept insisting the color was too green. No problem. I quickly adjusted this within the Menu, and there was no more complaining.
Features:
* TV/VCR/DVD
* VCR has 4 Video Heads
* 27" Diagonal Screen Size
* DVD Video, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, CD (Audio), CD-R, CD-RW playable disks
Display:
* 4:3 Aspect Ratio
* NTSC Built In Tuner
Remote Control is Standard and is Non-Illuminated; however, it has a light one can turn on to help see the buttons in the dark.
Image Quality:
* Does not have Invar Shadow mask
* Velocity Scan Modulation is without VSM
Audio:
* Virtual Surround
* SAP/MTS Stereo
* Virtual Dolby Surround Sound Type
* Does NOT have Audio Leveler
The sound is quite good and much better than my last TV that I reviewed http://www.epinions.com/elec-review-5401-144CFFBB-395EE915-prod5 Sanyo TV Review. I do not get a "louder in the next room, but you can't here it right in front of you" effect like the Sanyo.
Technical Features:
* Without Picture In Picture (PIP)
* V-Chip Parental Control
* With Commercial Skip
* Sleep Timer
* Energy Star Compliant
Super Geek Technical Features:
* RF X 1 Rear Input Connectors
* Audio (RCA) X 1 Rear Output Connectors
* Composite X 1, Audio (RCA) X 1 Front Input Connectors
* Has Headphone Jack
Screen Text has Channel labels, Closed Caption on Mute feature which I like very much. The OSD languages are English, French, and Spanish.
The TV has 2 speakers with a speaker power of 2 X 2.5 Watt.
The actual Dimensions are 30.38" wide, 21" depth, 25.75" height, and 92.5 lb! I told you it was freaking heavy! I like to move a lot, so this TV isn't for you if you like to be mobile. The next TV I hope to get will be a flat, light weight LCD TV for this purpose alone if nothing more.
There is a 2 year warranty on the tube and an overall warranty of 1 year. Batteries are included for the Remote Control.
All in all, this has been a good TV except for the VCR player intermittent problem. I think the TV is too heavy, but I have learned from my mistake. However, at the time, it was a good buy since it was around $350. I suppose I can't complain too much since other than the VCR problem, I haven't had any other problems at all.
Thank you for reading.
