Almost a great deck, but has a BIG problem

Pros Almost everything is done right with this unit, except for ONE BIG PROBLEM.
Cons IRRITATING POPPING SOUND in the background when playing any disc other than a store-bought CD!
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Don't buy this one to play CD-Rs or MP3s on CD-R!
I bought a new car a few weeks ago and sold my 10-disc changer with the old car. As I'm not used to having less than 10 discs available to me at any given time, I decided to pick up this unit, rip all my CDs to MP3 and put my original CDs back into the cases (most of them haven't seen their cases in years!) So I bought the CQ-DP383U unit, put it in my car, ripped all my CDs to MP3, and burned them onto CD-Rs. I was very pleased with almost all the features of this unit, including the appearance, controls, and radio reception.

However, I noticed a big problem. Whenever it's playing anything other than a store-bought silver CD, it makes popping sounds like a son of a ***** from all four speakers whenever there is silence (examples: before songs, between songs, when the volume goes low on a song, etc.) It's very noticeable at some times, not so noticeable at other times, yet it's always there!

I went back to the store where I bought the thing to try their demo unit. It does exactly the same thing! I tried other MP3-enabled decks in the store (ones made by Panasonic as well as others such as JVC) to make sure it wasn't just my discs and, sure enough, this was the only model they had that does this. I certainly notice the popping sounds, and I'm not exactly what you'd call an audiophile, so the general public would probably notice it as well. It's hard to miss when it's coming from all sides!

To summarize: if you don't intend to play CD-Rs or MP3s very much, or you listen to a lot of radio, this is a pretty good unit. If you do, however, use these types of media on a regular basis then you may be better off with something else.
