Good VCR Replacement

Pros 100 mg harddrive, quite small easy set up
Cons 24 hour setup for TV guide, Manual
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  It is a good replacement for a VCR but it takes a while to get use to it.
My good old VCR was dieing a slow death. You can't fine a good VCR for sale anymore, you have to go with a DVD recorder. There are many out on the market and their prices are going down fast, but if you spend a little more You can get a great machine.
The Panasonic DMR-EH50 DVD recorder is a great machine. Setup is very easy, 4 step. The one problem is if you are going to use the built in TV Guide feature you can't use the machine for 24 hours. It must sit on stand-by for this time to down load the full program. They are not kidding. If you start it to soon this feature will not work, it must sit 24 hour. After it sits programing is easy pick the show and enter and you are done. This only works with cable, will not work with satalite. You can hook it up with your cable box to record digital channels, but you can't watch another channel while it is recording. I just use the basic channels, it works fine. It does not do HDTV, if you want that those records are around $1000.
Recording to built in Hard Drive is what makes this recorder better than others. recording at a normal speed the HD will hold 45 hours of programming. A menu of shows recorded comes up with titles and dates that makes finding the shows a breeze. You can record to a DVD (all types except DVD +RW) This works very well and you can tranfer from the HD to DVD very fast. I have not used the SD card slot, but I believe it will work just as well. The machine is very quite and small. It needs to be in its own area because heat will effect its' preformance.
The one bad thing to say about the machine is the owners manual. The 4 step setup is the only good thing to say about it. The manual covers every thing but is very hard to follow and written very poorly. There are so many things the machine can do, but the manual jumps all over the place. Simple things like manually setting the timer is hard to understand if you can even find it. I walked myself through it. I does lay out how to tranfer from your old vcr to DVD, but it seems most of the manual is about that. Just don't be suprised if you must look in to the manual the first few times you do something. Mark the page on things you do alot, it will help you until you are more confortable with the machine
