Panasonic DMR-E50 DVD Recorder - DVD Recording Quality and TiVo-Like Features

Pros Excellent picture quality in XP and SP mode, chasing payback/time slip, features
Cons No digital audio input, no 5.1 audio recording
Recommended it? Yes

The Panasonic DMR-E50 is a DVD-Recorder that allows you to record DVD discs in two formats – write-once DVD-R and rewriteable DVD-RAM. The finalized DVD-R discs play in most newer DVD players, whereas DVD-RAM discs can be played in newer Panasonic DVD players.

Pros Great picture stability. Playlist is good for basic video editing (with average accuracy)
Cons A few engineering errors. "Recover mode" lockup. Counter/timer display not in...
Recommended it? Yes

Well, the E50 is a great DVD recorder and worth the price. I bought two of them for professional video editing and have found some problems that look like Panasonic just got in a hurry on their engineering at the last minute.
The first thing is a nasty problem that you will run across if you... Read full review »

Excellent low-mid price range DVD burner, with one weakness.

Pros Great progressive scan component video quality, recording is easy and generally good...
Cons Does not play DVD+R media, remote has annoying door covering some frequently-used buttons.
Recommended it? Yes

With set-top DVD burners becoming affordable, we decided to take the plunge. We already have a DVD+R burner on our computer (more on this later), but we wanted an easier way to convert our old VHS camcorder tapes to DVD. After doing quite a bit of research, I decided that for the price the... Read full review »

I got all hooked up last night & got it all working. Way Cool!! I was able to record from all video input sources: Security cam, Cable TV, Satellite TV, VCR, DVD, & even the radio. I even got the universal remote to operate my TV, even though the manual instructions are not very specific on this... Read full review »

It's ok, but I returned it.

Pros Easier to find certain scenes, compared to using video tape.
Cons Picture quality and editing features not up to expectations.
Recommended it? No

I thought I'd get something to replace my old s-vhs machine, so I could enjoy the same or better picture quality, plus more flexible editing. I paid $800 Canadian, which is about $575 US.
However, for starters, the picture quality was not as good as my s-vhs machine. The picture quality was... Read full review »

Pros Good menu navigation, 99% dependable dubbing, 100% hard drive recording and scheduling.
Cons The newer models have firewire input.

So I've had this recorder for over a year and a half. I use it every day to record for later viewing and archiving when I want to keep it. It records to hard drive flawlessly and archives to DVD +/- R, 99% of the time. Sometimes if the video has been on the hard drive for months, is has trouble... Read full review »

Pros Ease of use, functionality, versatility
Cons None really

I was getting tired of juggling tapes around... putting them in to see what was recorded on them to make sure I didn't tape over anything I hadn't seen yet, etc. Then having a bad recording because the tape I used several times was worn out. Plus I just wanted to step into the 21st century. First I... Read full review »

My good old VCR was dieing a slow death. You can't fine a good VCR for sale anymore, you have to go with a DVD recorder. There are many out on the market and their prices are going down fast, but if you spend a little more You can get a great machine.

Cons Doesn't produce an excellent product beyond the 3 hour mode.

I'm on my second DMR-E50. The first one finally died after a year's hard labor (daily, nonstop use). I bought my second one shortly thereafter, and it's going strong. Excellent machine if you don't need a hard drive for editing. Read full review »
