The Bottom Line:
It's no longer a dream. The portable DVD-players are here and this is probably the best one on the market. GO AND BUY IT!!
I've been happy for a month now, and I probably going to be happy for the next month too, and maybe even the month after next. Why? Because I bought the Panasonic DVD-LV65 a month ago. It has a 5 inch screen, and it is light and easy to carry around. You heard me. A DVD-player that's easy to carry around.
The Panasonic DVD-LV65 looks like a quite ordinary CD-player (We all know, that it is what's inside that counts). Though it is a little bit thicker and has a more quadrangular shape, it still fits in your former CD-bag. Though you have to put the battery in the extra pocket.
In addition to playing DVDs (like that's not enough!), it can also play music-CDs and MP3, show pictures (jpeg) and video-CD's in several different types of format. The player is basically a zone 1,2, 3, player (depends on where in the world you buy it), but it can be modified through the remote control. Then it plays all zones.
There is also a port for SD-cards. Here you can put in your memory card from your camera, and see the pictures on the 5 inch screen. Of course you can also read mp3-files or MPEG4 (video) directly from this port.
Maybe the most important thing to check when you are thinking of buying a portable DVD-player, is the battery capacity. I'm guessing it's quite boring to have to recharge the battery halfway through the movie. This ain't a problem with the DVD-LV65. I've experienced that it lasts for about 4 hours before it asks for a refill.
The player has a screen which is attached on way, which makes it possible to lift it up and turn it against you. This design makes it easier to place the DVD-player. You can have it on your lap and turn the screen so it lies on top of the player itself, or you can place it on a table and lift up the screen.
This paragraph is dedicated to the pleasure of having a portable DVD-player. You can think of this player as a "boredom-eliminator". Say goodbye to boring moments on busses, trains and planes. Wherever you are, you can always watch a movie (if it's enough battery left). For you guys who constantly are on the move, this is the perfect gadget, whether you are a youngster or an adult. Another practical feature is that you can connect it to your television. If you have two TVs and the one with the DVD-player is being used, then just hook up the DVD-LV65 on the other one and your ready. The only thing missing then is the coke and the bag of chips.
The DVD-LV65 has a comprehensive menu with several user-settings. Although I miss the opportunity to adjust the bass and the treble. It's possible that it is a way to do this, but I've both read the manual and used it for a month now, and the only thing I've found is a pre-setting which is supposed to give clearer speaking-sound.
There is no doubt that the DVD-LV65 is a personal device. It is, of course, possible to gather family and friends in front of the screen, but the built-in speaker isn't much to brag about. To get full enjoyment of the movie I would recommend you to use headphones. The 5 inch screen doesn't invite to share the experience either.
As I mentioned above, there is possible to connect it to your TV. The player has optical out for audio and standard out for composite video-signal.
The first time you're going to use it you feel a little bit back current. At the same time as TVs getting bigger and bigger, you sit down to watch a movie on your 5 inch screen. But as you may guess, those big plasma-TVs isn't well suited for traveling, and it doesn't take a long time before you have forgotten that it is a miniature-cinema you're looking at. The distance to the screen is short, and the picture on the DVD-LV65 is as sharp as it can be with good colors and surprisingly good contrast.
