No
The Bottom Line:
Not recommended for upsampling task. Plan to spend more if quality is the goal. Poor doc made installatioin difficult.
I purchased this unit as part of a bedroom entertainment solution. The total solution was to be a 37" 1080P LCD, a PS3, and the Panasonic DVD-S53. The AKAI display had one HDMI and one component video input, and my intention was to attach the PS3 as the HDMI source and the DVD as a component video source. During integration, I discovered that the DVD upsampling feature only applies to the HDMI output. This fact caused contention for the HDMI port on the display which was resolved by purchasing an HDMI switching device and more high quality cables. Configuring the DVD-S53 to operate in upsampling mode was not simple, and required a variety of specific configuration settings that were poorly documented in the manual. Once the hardware was all configured, the quality of the upsampling was questionable. The quality of the Blu-Ray output of the PS3 was obvious and amazing, but the output of the DVD, while recognized at 1080P was not obvious. I should point out that at a price of under $100, the DVD player costed less than one of the HDMI cables involved. I think my expectation of the device was too high for the price paid. Upsampling benchmarks would have kept me from shooting in the dark about quality.
