The Bottom Line:
Compare with Pioneer and JVC on sound, price, and features and you may be convinced too.
I've had the Panasonic head for about a month now and I've been very pleased with it. What swayed me to this Panasonic over Pioneer is the AUX input. I needed a way to connect my MP3 jukebox (not an IP*D) and I loathe the FM transmitter (though it saved me in a rental car through two thousand miles this summer) so the auxiliary input was the way to go. The unit has a bunch of pre-set EQ's which are very good for the most part. They are each configurable and your configuration can be saved. There is your general bass +/- and treble +/- as well as a 7 band EQ where you can adjust each frequency. Very nice touch.
The face has a number of tilt options which should help out many people whose players sit low in the dash. I didn't look for this feature initially but the slight upward tilt I use is appreciated.
The most important thing of course is the sound. I had what most people I knew considered to be a good stock double-din deck but there's nothing like an after-market system. I have four Infinity 6001's- no sub, no amp- and the unit pushes them very cleanly. Definitely pleased with the overall sound and it's cool to occasionally hear things in a song while driving that I could only hear on my home system.
The screen is very bright and easy to read overall. The sun was bright today and I had my sunglasses on but I could still read the screen well enough. If anything, maybe a dimmer would be cool for at night. Not really a big deal.
Basically, if you're looking for a new head unit, give this one a long look. Circuit City was selling it for about $200 in Aug. '05.
