The Bottom Line:
Great camcorder at a budget price
I just got this camera and am very impressed with the features found on this low cost camcorder. A firewire cable is nessecary to transfer from the camera to the computer. It has a USB port as well but I have really found no use for this as of yet. I am still learning it so I am sure I will figure out the purpose of the USB. The Magicpix feature works well in low light but is like watching slow motion. So far I feel that the camera is a great value for the money. It does have a good time code which will be essential for editing purposes. The effects are much better than I would have expected for an inexpensive camera.
I had to go to the Panasonic site to download the software for this camera which was not a problem. The owners manual is not much help in figuring out how to navigate the camera. Trial and error worked best for me. It is pretty long but vague in the areas that you might need the most info on. It also does not have seperate audio in and out jacks but this is just a very minor setback.
I am very impressed with the video quality. I had a Sony Hi-8 that worked well for many years before finally quitting. The video quality on the Panasonic is better than the HI-8 had. It is digital though so that should be expected.
This camera will also allow you to take still shots which is a plus. Editing with this unit has also proven to be very easy.
As palmcorders go, it is very small but does use a DV tape. Even the DV tapes are very reasonable and can be found at your local discount retailer.
Overall I think this is a great camera, especially for the price, and would definitely recommend it.
