Not bad as a DVD player, horrible with JPEG files
Pros
Good video and audio quality.
Cons
Very limited JPEG file capabilities
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
The video and audio quality is good, bit very poor JPEG file capabilities, no optical digital audio output.
I purchased Panasonic DVD-S25K DVD player mostly because my older DVD player could not read JPEG files which became a very necessary feature for me after I bought a digital camera. The fact that Panasonic DVD-S25K also supported progressive scan output didn't hurt either.
To my great disappointment the JPEG capabilities of this DVD player turned out to be quite limited. I own a 5 Mega Pixel digital camera, and in its finest picture quality mode it produces JPEG images of over 2 Mega Bytes. This, however, appeared a little too much for this DVD player. First of all, it would take it up to 5 seconds to just read an image of this size, and some of the vertical images wouldn't even come up! And what about images scanned from regular photographs using semi-decent scanning resolution? Well, these wouldn't ever come up at all.
As a DVD player Panasonic DVD-S25K is quite decent though. The picture quality is very nice, and the sound quality is not bad either (especially if you use the coax digital audio output). I find the dialogue enhancer to be one of its very useful features.
Unfortunately, this DVD player has no optical output, which is a shame, since many receivers out there (including my Onkyo TX-SR601) have several optical digital inputs, yet only a single coax digital audio input, so the competition between various components for this coveted coax input may become quite severe!
And another minor thing about this DVD player that for some reason I find extremely annoying: its front panel only displays track number and not the track time.
