The Bottom Line:
Great combination of features without unnecessary gimicks that is much cheaper than DLP, LCD, and Plasma. Works fine at high altitude, 7000 feet- sorry Plasma.
We were looking for a medium sized TV with HDTV, progressive scan, and multiple widescreen aspect capabilities. Originally we were planning to purchase a widescreen tube set with moderate resolution (1024 X 768 or better), but found the weight of these products to be completely unmanageable.
When we saw this Panasonic projection TV with HDTV capability, we thoroughly tested it in the store and found that despite its slightly lower resolution, it outperformed many of the higher resolution sets. We have seen product specifications that claim the set weighs ~170 lbs. After lifting the behemoth, we believe it weighs closer to 110 lbs without the packaging. The weight is nearly irrelevant once on the ground since it has wheels.
There are many component inputs (~5) in the back of the TV, which almost eliminates the need for a receiver patch panel.
The lighted remote is very simple to use and program. The TV programs ~100 available channels in less than 1 minute-- faster than most competitors. PIP works in several modes including splitscreen: great for multiple football games.
The multiple imaging modes: Vivid, Cinema, Normal... allow you to taylor the image to your desires. We liked the cinema mode for Lord of the Rings: Two Towers, and Vivid for Finding Nemo. In addition, the TV has an aspect button that allows you to change the viewing mode from 4:3 to widescreen to zoom. This allows to you put the picture into the display mode that is most comfortable for you.
The sound could use some improvement, but this is minor. If you're using it for viewing DVDs and Dolby sound films, you'll need a surround sound system to back up the TV anyway.
Glare from the screen can interfere with your picture-- but we're told a protective screen layer can reduce this.
