The Bottom Line:
The best rear projection television in it's class.
Having been accustomed to the more popular smaller televisions (28" is what I've always had), I thought I'd go for the gusto and buy a big screen tv.
I had my heart set on a plasma tv, and was trying to justify the thousands of dollars I'd be spending on a plasma tv to my wife. I was selling my wife on the concept of a plasma tv (the picture clarity, the colors, the sound, etc.) I figured I'd take her to see the picture for herself. As we started to walk down the television isle lo and behold I caught a glimpse of Panasonic's 47" Rear Projection television (model #: PT47X54). One word came to mind....WOW.
Once I saw how sharp this picture was, and how good the sound was (I had the sales rep turn it up for me), I was hooked.
Panasonic outdid themselves on this set. While it's not a plasma tv, I assure you the colors are vibrant and very clear. The sound is so crystal clear I decided not to get a theatre system (initially I intended to buy one). One thing I'd suggest to anybody who is going to buy this set ; make sure you buy the monster cables and the surge protector (the good one). The monster cables and the surge protector does make a difference.
What I especially liked about this model is that I didn't have to sit down and read a novel on how to work it. Just plugged it in and it started to work! There are a fair number of features but you learn those easily as you go along. No real need for the manual (except to verify what you already learned).
The only down side to this television though, is the remote control. Some of the buttons are really small (not practical). But I'm not sweating that. I have my satellite receiver's remote hooked up to control the television. The remote control isn't that bad, it's just....a bit of a nuisance.
Once you get past the remote control (IF in fact it bothers you), you'll like this tv. This tv, in my opinion, is the best rear projection tv you can buy for your money's worth. You get more bang for your buck - no doubt about it.
