Panasonic PT47X54 CRT Based Projection HDTV

Pros Dual-Tuner-PIP (Split Screen), Picture Quality for Regular (Analog) Tv, Sound Quality without extrenal amp.
Cons Remote Control, Bulky Depth (away from wall), Sleep Timer Function.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Two Words..... BUY IT! I belive my review says it all, it has the most BANG for your BUCK!
This is my 1st Big Screen. For anybody looking to step up to a CRT Based Projection HDTV, this gets my vote!

After going from TV's sized @ 20", 27", 32", and now to 47" you can not believe the quilty of the picture.

Yeah, I know.........HD rocks! But I do not have HD or Digital Cable (as of now) and this TV is still real clear with just the Regular Analog Cable!

As you know, years ago Projection TV's looked poor compared to Picture Tube Based TV's, and thats why I stayed with my 32" JVC for the past 5yrs. But not any more.

Here is some facts:

It has: Auto convergence & Manual convergence (adjusts the alignment of the red, green, blue images) used after moving the TV or adding additional speakers near the TV.

30 watt total output BBE HD sound system.

2 Tuner (split screen) PIP. This is real nice, I love this option, the Sony TV's also have this feature too.

V-Chip feature with Locks & Passwords for the Little Ones Protection.

3 A/V Inputs Rear & 1 Front.
2 Component Inputs Rear.
2 S-video Inputs Rear & 1 Front.
1 set of Audio In's & 1 set of Audio Out's (to amp).
1 HDMI AV In

Commpatible Formats 1080i, 480i, 480p.

Has a nice sized shelf (top) holds 25 lbs, great for the dvd & vcr.

Quick note, since I run Regular TV (Analog) on this 16:9 widescreen, you get these 2 black bars on the right & left side of your picture and that look bad. It the opposite of watching a 16:9 Widescreen DVD on a 4:3 Regular TV where you get the bars on the top & Bottom. Thats why we upgraded to a new TV, (we love DVD's).

Anyway........ this Panasonc TV has a new feature / setting called "Just" and what it does is STRETCH the right & left edges so that your Regular TV looks like 16:9 format and its now FULL SCREEN like a DVD. I love this feature, when the salesman showed me this feature & also the split screen PIP, along with picture & sound, I bought it.

This Split Screen is Nice. You hear the sound of the Left picture, and can SWAP back & forth between screens and also change channels on the right while you watch & hear the left screen.

There is also a SEARCH mode while in split screen, and what it does is: the screen goes from 50/50 to like 75% from the left but now shows (3) screens in a vertical strip on the right. It cycles through these 1 x 1 and you see the action for like 2 sec, and then it freezes and goes to the next channel like 3,4,5,6,ect... when you see someting that looks good, you can SWAP it to the 50/50 scrren and then goto Full Screen. I love this Feature!

Downside is the Remote has small buttons, but you can get another if you like (I have hudge hands), however it does have a light button that makes ALL the Buttons glow red for like 2 secs (great in the dark).

However, they dropped the ball with the 'SLEEP' Fuction on this TV. If you have a family member (wife) like mine who is 'electronicly challenged' then they might have a hard time putting the TV into SLEEP mode. There is NO 1 sleep button (like on all my other TV's), you need to access like (3) menue's deep, to put the TV in to Sleep mode. This is not a problem for anybody who has regular skills with a PC or TV menu screens, however for my wife, and some older guests, this is too confussing.

Depth, away from the wall is about 28 to 29" but hey, its not a LCD or Plasma, right!

Lastly, I have two good friends who have Sonys TV's.
One has a Sony KP-51WS520 $1699 and the other has a Sony KP-57WS520 $1999, and while there TV's look great with HD TV & DVD's like mine, they do not display REGULAR TV as well. So if you run REGULAL Analog TV then buy this OVER the Sony's, and at $1234.00 I thought it was a great deal.
