Great Picture, Average Engineering

byrob3ri Jul 23, 2006
Pros We're using the DV input with wonderful results. Planet Earth in hi-def looks great!
Cons Stock ballast defective in this model series, but repairable.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Although the picture looked better compared side-by-side with other store models when I bought this, the stock high-voltage power supply needs repair.
June 2007 update

The rating of this device is being raised slightly because after repair, it hasn't failed in two years. The first couple of years with this were unacceptable because of the short TY-LA1000 lamp life. Sometime in the third year, the bulb died again, and a new bulb did not work. Yes, that was the 4th bulb. Ouch.

After taking it to a repair shop, it was discovered Panasonic had released a repair kit for the HVPS, including a capacitor and diode. The defective HVPS had "eaten" the new bulb, and at $300 a pop, I was none too pleased. But now, apparently, it is fixed.

The 1080i picture is excellent, but you'll only fully appreciate it while playing DVDs or if you watch high-definition channels. When purchased, this ran $2,500.

The less you cycle power to the lamp, the better. After repair, we haven't needed to replace the bulb in almost 2 years. Once ours is on, we leave it on until bedtime.

Replacement bulbs run $300 (suggest mcminone.com, currently at $279), so if you can get an extended warranty that includes the bulb for less than $300, you've saved some money.

What amazes me is how lightweight these things are compared to a CRT television. You could lift this yourself if it weren't for the size.
