The Bottom Line:
Nice middle of the road, picture quality is dramatically better then standard def big screens, but didn't cost nearly as much as a "true hi def" TV. Tremendous value.
When I started looking for a large screen TV I became pretty disillusioned. All of the standard definition big screens really didn?t look very good at any price point. I looked at some of the high-definition TV?s available at the time and got pretty severe sticker shock I also wasn?t really interested in a 16x9 aspect ratio, there just is not that much content out there that supports the aspect ratio.
After perusing the net for a while I found the Panasonic PT 51 DX 80. After checking it out side by side I was blown away. This is not a ?true? high def set, but it does support 480 progressive scan and up-samples all video to 480p with an internal line doubler (true hi-def is considered 720p or 1080i)
The brightness of the picture is stunning compared to a standard TV since at any given time there are twice as many lines on screen. Satellite looks great and DVD into the component video inputs looks amazing.
I honestly can?t review the sound since I run everything through my AV receiver, and I have a Sony Universal remote so I don?t use the remote either, for me this purchase was all about picture quality. (and a little about not spending $7000 to get it!)
The only complaint that I may have is the somewhat overly reflective protective film for the screen; it occasionally creates some glare problems.
