The Bottom Line:
Good color, excellent HD viewing, good price.
After a lot of searching around, I settled on this Panny model. There is another 53" labeled 53WX52 that contains 4 speakers, and a larger more advanced remote control, but since I have all my sound coming from a Sony A/V receiver, so I didn't need that model or the extra cost.
The set has two component inputs for your HD viewing, 3 s-video/composite inputs (including a front input set for your camera) and of course, ota rf input. The cabinet is a medium gray and as luck would have it, I found two a/v cabinets that exactly matched the color at Lowe's. These I'm using to put the DVD player, satellite receiver, A/V receiver and vcr, and the other to contain my tapes and dvd's.
Straight out of the box, (after setting the convergence)and using a RCA DTC-100 satellite receiver, the hd channels looked tremendous. After acquiring an outside antenna for my local channels (shades of the 50's) my wife and I were blown away by the clarity and detail the Panny showed while watching Jay Leno and the Demo loop that PBS is running continuously. For the first hour or two, we were more interested in counting hairs on someone's head than to actually watch the show. It truly is amazing.
In another review, someone said the remote is hard to use. It's not that it's too hard to use, just that it has so many functions it's really cluttered. You have to go through several steps to access picture settings, channel setups, timers and locks, but no more than what I had to do with my other widescreen Pioneer tv.
I haven't worked up enough nerve to access the service menu yet, but after reading a little more about it, will probably do it in the future. Just got to remember to write the factory settings down.
When I got the tv, I ordered a Sony RM-AV3000 remote control. Without doing a review of this item here, all I'm going to say is it controls all my devices great, and I don't have to fumble around with 2-3 remotes when watching a program or movie. I highly recommend it.
I checked off durability with a rating of 4, but it's impossible for me to rate this tv only having it for about 2 weeks. It does appear solid but only time will tell.
This set has met all my expectations and then some.
