17 years of disappointments

Pros HDTV is OK. About 3% of my available programming.
Cons 70 channels of unacceptable, fuzzy reception. Projection TV means pulling the shades down, too.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  If you want to watch HDTV and DVD's only, then this unit is acceptable. If you want to enjoy your digital cable, this unit is unacceptable.
Re Panasonic TV PT 53WX52

In 1986, Ronald Reagan was in his second term-and I made the mistake of buying a Sony 41" Projection TV. A blurry piece of junk. For 2 grand.

Flash to 2003. Mr. Stupid does it again. Must be the years that Republicans are in the Presidency. Bought the Panasonic PT 53WX52 Projection TV. Money was the problem, since I wanted a 16:9 screen, and Plasma are priced out of sight right now. Guess what? A blurry piece of junk. For a little less than 2 grand.

Basically, this TV is only useful for HDTV transmissions and DVD movies. I don't like to watch (and pay) for the many over the air movies, so my cable HDTV choices are ABC, CBS, Discovery Channel, and a repetitive PBS Demonstration Channel. So basically 3 channels. The picture is great-when there's something to watch. Usually partial prime-time and maybe 2 weekend sports offerings.

The other 70 cable channels are awful. Blurry. Even in the 4 to 3 mode, which my Cable man said I shouldn't use due to "burn in" concerns. Great. So what to do? Zoom, Full, and Justified modes stink. Blurry, out of dimension. Cable Guy said there was nothing wrong with the TV or the settings-That I am just basically screwed. Again.

So Doogster is forced to watch a 4 year old 32" Pro Scan in the den most of the time. Beautiful picture. For almost everything. The Cable guy was nice enough to give me a feed to this TV, and combined with a trusty old descrambler, I get everything I need.

So the Panasonic sits in the living room, taking up space, except for an occasional HDTV program of interest. Being so huge, it serves as a support for decorations, small statues, etc. I think I could have found a cheaper way of displaying things, however.

My only hopes are:

1. That more HDTV programs are coming-Thank you Jesus that ESPN will be on HDTV starting March 30.

2. That we stop electing Republicans, so I will stop buying blurry pieces of crap.

Update: I returned the television for full credit 3 weeks later. I also canceled the HDTV feed-My cable company will not carry ESPN HD. I got sick of having to close the blinds during the day, so I could watch a non-HDTV program, too.

Your HDTV choice is basically :

1. Flat screen 4:3, which is OK, but movies are not as impressive on 4:3. Sports, too.
2. Projection, which will be feasible in about year 2007, if we're lucky, when everything is supposed to be available.
3. Plasma or hopefully larger LCD-Lucky you with the big bucks.

My advice-Buy plasma-or wait a couple of years. Sad.....

Update: I just read the other review by the Magnum guy, and I'm concerned that he's either sight impaired or a plant for the manufacturer-especially when he slobbers over the great picture quality-and doesn't even have HDTV! Bet he only watches DVD's
