Versatile projector at a reasonable price

Pros High light output, placement flexibility, color accuracy, reasonable cost.
Cons Short warranty
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  An excellent projector for the price, the best 720p projector available with superior light output and projector placement flexibility.
I have been researching projectors for quite a while and finally decided on the PT-AX100U. This is an excellent projector for the first time projector buyer. It is a big improvement over the previous year model (PT-AE900U).
The biggest improvement is the amount of light this thing puts out. 2000 lumens is one of the highest outputs for a home theater projector (compared to 1100 lumens on the PT-AE900U). This allows you to have some light in the room while viewing. This is great for viewing sports in the daytime.
The other stand out feature is the projector placement flexibility. There is a 2:1 zoom that allow you to place the projector at different distances from the screen (for a 100" screen, you can place the projector as close as 10' or as far away as 20'). It is can be mounted on the ceiling or put on a shelf (I have mine on the back wall). It also has an easy to adjust lens shift, which allow you to place the projector off center from the screen.
The remote is better than most projector remotes and allows for switching between different modes that have different brightness and color characteristics. Another great thing is the projector colors are very accurate out of the box (especially for Cinema1 mode). This is unusual for projectors, normally some tweaking is required. You are able to adjust the colors and other characteristics and create custom modes with your settings. One of the complaints about LCD projectors is that they cannot generate a deep black color. I find the black acceptable (I am using a gray screen which helps produce deeper blacks).
The projector is fairly quiet (all projectors have fans that are running while the projector is on to handle the heat generated by the bulb). I can hear the fan when I have the sound off, but it is not distracting. There are all the standard connections on the back (HDMI, component, composite, S-video).
The warranty period on this projector is shorter than most, which is one of the few bad things about it. I bought the projector from projector.com which had excellent service. If you are willing to spend a couple hundred more, you can get it from Costco (which has a great return policy).
This is the best 720p projector available today. Since it is fairly new, you will probably pay close to $2000. The price will come down over time or Panasonic will start offering rebates.
