The Bottom Line:
In summary, Panasonic delivers a simple to use VCR that is reliable and affordable.
I first consulted Consumer Reports to get a review on the current features and quality in VCR's. The basic conclusion was a VCR is a VCR and shop by feature and reliability. Panasonic was noted as having the least amount of repairs. So I chose Panasonic.
To determine which model, I visited Panasonic's website and started with the base model and moved up the model line until I got to the features I didn't really need. Once the PV-9451 was chosen, I headed over to Best Buy and bought one.
Set-up was rather easy and I was recording in no time. However, most advanced features are only accessible via the remote, so don't loose it. I found it helpful to have some controls on the VCR base unit (play, stop, eject, forward, rewind, record and channel up/down).
The remote is a sea of buttons and isn't laid out very well. But over time you figure out which buttons to push without looking. The remote does light up which is handy when viewing with dimmed lights.
There is an auto-clock set feature that tunes into your local PBS station, but I have yet been able to get that to work. So I program the time manually, but it's easy.
The recording quality is what I expect from a VCR at this price range and I am not disappointed.
