Can Do Better

byRover Jan 1, 2003
Pros Programming, universal remote.
Cons Low quality recording, loud.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Disappointing product from a name that's been respected.
I purchased the V4611 to replace a 12 year old Magnavox that was short on features and cable electronics. I chose the V4611 to program record more shows over a longer period of time, and to take advantage of a more modern tuner for my cable feed.

I've been happy with the program recording features of the V4611. I like to record syndication shows that run M-F, but not on weekends; and the V4611 allows M-F only recording of those shows. The recording quality of the V4611 is disappointing. The SP mode produces a decent picture, but the SLP mode, the most common for me, produces a noisy, grainy picture that is substandard... and compares unfavorably to the Magnavox unit that the V4611 replaced. The V4611 could also be quieter in both play and record modes.

The tuner electronics in the V4611 allow me to receive more cable stations than my Magnavox allows, and the picture quality is good, but for some reason the electronics have begun to fail in less than 12 months. As of this writing, I can receive most of the cable stations with little or no noise/distortion, but I can't receive at all what should be a strong, clear signal from the ABC station. Strangely, the Disney (ABC's parent) cable stations also show unusual reception problems. The V4611 is definitely the reason for the problems because I get a clean signal when I bypass the V4611.

The V4611 comes with a cheesy, but typical 1 year parts and 90 day labor warranty... which is generally worthless because normal labor cost and the unit's cost are in the same ball park.

Some of the nice things about the V4611 are the universal remote and the front panel video/audio plugs for VCR to VCR recording. In the end, however, the tuner and recorder are the most important features... and the tuner failed me in less than 12 months while the recording quality is average.
