Excellent SVHS VCR

bypvr8 May 31, 2002
Pros Excellent features, beautiful picture, great sound, svhs, svhs-et, easy setup
Cons noisy rewind
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Want a SVHS VCR that has great features and excellent sound and picture quality? Then this one is highly recommended. If you can find one, buy it, and be happy.
After owning this VCR for more than a year, I finally set up all of the features and did some of my first programmed recording. I was surprised at how easy it is to program.

This VCR is loaded with great features that are actually useful. Commercial advance is a feature that allows the VCR to mark the beginning and ending of every commercial that comes on while your are recording T.V. broadcasts. When you play back the program you've recorded, the VCR automatically fast forwards through the commercials. It's great, and if there's a commercial that you might want to see, you can stop the fast forward by hitting the play button. This VCR'S movie advance feature allows you to program it to skip over any previews on rented or bought pre-recorded vhs movies. The recordings made on this machine come out flawless and the commercial advance function is better than 90 percent accurate.

The picture quality from this VCR is excellent, beautiful color saturation and great detail. This is a SVHS VCR. The SVHS format gives this VCR higher resolution recording and play back than you can get in a regular Hi-Fi VCR. This means you get a sharper and more detailed picture to watch.

One feature that I really like is the cable box command. With this feature I can set the VCR up to record any cable broadcast and the VCR will automatically tune the cable box to the correct channel at the correct time. This can be done for as many as seven different programs and for up to one month in advance. This VCR is also home theatre ready which means that it can be hooked up to your audio system and intergrated into your home theatre set up. Since this VCR has Hi-Fi sound built in, it will play dolby pro-logic tapes in surround sound. I have this VCR hooked up to my home theatre system and the sound is awesome.

I looked at several other SVHS VCR'S (JVC, Sony, Mitsubishi)and The Panasonic offered more for its price than any of the others. It costs a little more than some SVHS VCR'S, but you do get what you pay for with this Panasonic. I was not able to find this model very easily. I saw it in a local store that only had the display unit and they were waiting to get some more in. Every local dealer was sold out of this unit. I finally found one dealer online who had one in stock and I paid a little extra to have it express shipped.

My only complaint about this unit is it's a little noisy when rewinding. I have a separate tape rewinder so I don't have to hear the rewinding noise very often. I can't find anything else that's bad about this VCR, I am totally satisfied with this fine piece of equipment. I wasn't able to get any kind of discount, so I paid top dollar for this VCR and it's worth every cent I paid and more.
