My experience with the Panasonic CQC1300U
Pros
Price, features- mp3 playback, cool blue display, brand has good customer service
Cons
Amp had to be repaired after 5 months- but is very unusual problem.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Recommended. I had a small problem with the amp, but had a good customer service experience with Panasonic.
I bought 2 of these units about 5 months ago. One for my truck and one for my wife's car. I got them for about $150 installed at Fry's electronics in Wilsonville, Oregon.
These units have all the features I was looking for- cdr/rw playback, remote control, text display and most important- mp3 playback. All of these features work well. When you first put in an mp3 cd it takes a little while to read, especially if you fill up the cd with files like I do. But once the files are loaded finding the files and folders is easy with the remote. Overall I would say that if you are looking for something with lots of features at an affordable price, this is a good unit.
The sound quality is excellent. I had it in with my stock speakers in my 2001 Dodge Dakota and with the built in 50 watt x 4 channel amp it is crisp and clear. I can imagine it would sound even better with a better set of speakers. The controls are all very easy to use. Mostly just the press of a button on the remote. The blue screen is easy to read. It is a little bright, especially at night. MP3 sound is just as clear as cds- though it always depends what file compression you have on the mp3 files.
One thing I will say as a con about this unit is that one of the two I bought had the amp go out a couple weeks ago. I've been assured by several local dealers that this is extremely uncommon for Panasonic units. I bought these units from Fry's because of the low price- but I would recommend buying it somewhere else. When I tried to exchange the defective unit still under factory warranty they told me I couldn't- even though they had about 50 of them on the shelf! Fortunately I called Panasonic and they were very helpful in giving me the phone number and address for a couple shops in my local area that could repair it for free since it was under full warranty. However, a good dealer would have just exchanged the unit. So that complaint is really more about Fry's than the unit itself.
Update- 01/17/2006- I don't have my truck anymore, but the unit I bought in my wife's car is still running without any problems. This is an excellent product.
