Pros Wonderful unit for VHS and DVD viewing and dubbing.
Cons Might be considered pricey at first.
Recommended it? Yes

We bought this unit because we needed a new DVD player. But the primary reason we wanted it was because I have lots of old VHS tapes of family members. A new Panasonic DMR-ES40VS is a DVD-recorder and a VCR combo that sells for less than $300 and is an update to the Panasonic DMR-ES30VS. The device records to DVD-RAM discs, DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+R (but not to DVD+RW) and has a FireWire (DV) input.

Pros Compatible with all single layer formats including DVD-RAM, Good Value, Easy Dubbing,...
Cons Automatic dubbing only, no editing. Locks up periodically, sometimes with fatal results.
Recommended it? No

I've always liked dual decks, even before there were DVD/VCR combos. Years ago I thought the coolest thing would be one of those GoVideo dual deck VCRs... Boy was I wrong, what a colossal piece of crap. You can read about that experience Here.

Pros Easily, and beautifully, converts VHS to DVD.
Cons An occasional lock-up needing a reboot.

Pros Picture quality, DVD's easier to store than tapes, pause button, ease of operation
Cons Limits on dubbing (might be my fault) occasional freezing when finalizing.
Recommended it? Yes

The very first VCR I purchased was a Panasonic. It was the first unit ever sold and was expensive. It did a great job .

Pros Picture quality, quiet fan, many good hardware/software features.
Cons Major flaw - internal VCR won't transfer to DVD without sloppily dividing segments.
Recommended it? No

Before I get to the good parts, the major flaw is this: I cannot figure a way transfer a home video to DVD without it butchering the contents by breaking up the footage into dozens of segments (titles) that overlap very poorly. Cons Don't buy this garbage recorder its a stinker 2 thumps down on this junker.

I am so sorry I bought this horrible DVD recorder. I had trouble with timer recording it won't say OK in check. It's a tape eater. The picture quality is like looking at the picture underwater. Pros Plays VHS tapes and DVDs and that's about it.
Cons Unable to dub anything as all home movies shown as "protected"
Recommended it? No

Bought this for Christmas 2005 and it worked perfectly for a week or so. I was able to dub home movies to DVD. Could also dub to DVD copies of movies and sports on VHS which I taped from TV. Out of curiosity I also tried dubbing store-bought VHS movies and was able to do this. So far so (too) good... Read full review »

Cons Slow to start DVD playback Inserts chapter-stops every 5 minutes 9 month lifespan

Purchased this in January 2005 almost solely for the VHS to DVD dub feature. My VHS tapes had, since I got my first DVD player 5 years ago, been rotting in a steamer trunk that doubled as a TV stand.
