Budget Bliss

Pros Sound as perfect as it gets at this price; features work equally well, three outputs
Cons CD transport can be iffy sometimes; some people hate how the thing looks
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Get it! That's all I have to say. Unless you've got the big bucks or want to see surfers going across your HU's screen, it's a fabulous buy.
I purchased one of these to accompany a basic Sub/Amp setup and four new Nakamichi speakers in my girlfriend's car.

Well, I can't keep things simple. The Sub ended up Infinity and the speakers adjusted over and over for imaging and depth. The Amp needed crossover tuning and gain adjusting. The Sub box wouldn't stay attached to the carpet. I suck at wiring.

But for all that caused me ill, the head unit never did. My car will definitely be sporting the Panasonic logo in the future. Through the entire process, it was no less than completely perfect.

First, the most important aspect; the sound. It's crystalline. This is the best MOSFET setup you're going to find for $110, I can tell you that. Crank it all the way up and it doesn't even wheeze. Nor does it sound bad - Nakamichi speakers reproduce flaws in any system, especially in the high end. None exist here. I was going to run a seperate amp, but I no longer see a reason. This thing gives me all the quality and power I searched for.

Asthetically, it's well-wrought. Some find the design gaudy, but I love it. I hate push-button volume. Despise it. My chief stipulation was the ability to reach out and CRANK the volume - what satisfaction do you get from reaching out and PUSHING it? None. The knob is smooth and satisfying, indeed. The buttons are sort of small, but very easy to get used to. The layout is clean and well-lit at night with a pleasant blue on red scheme that is both bright and blending.

You can adjust bass, treble, and sub level. The sub level is the most impressive, and you can dramatically change the sub level. Whether you want blendy or BOOMy, you can do it. One of my favourite features.

The CD transport is sort of shaky sometimes, and tends to skip on CDs with marginal scratches. As long as you don't use your CDs to refinish tables or something, you should be fine, though. It's a very good transport otherwise, absolutely distortion-free and able to reproduce the whole spectrum with authority.

You get three preamp outputs (front/rear, sub) and I'm only using the sub. The output voltage is 2.5. I've never heard (or felt - damn, Infinity Perfects hit low!) any problems.

The tuner is easy to use and the presets just as easily set. It's also quite sensitive, so you can listen to anything from overbroadcasted pop music to posh Public ramblings with ease.

A very good deal, indeed.
