The Bottom Line:
I think, this system is a good choice for those who want to save space, time and effort.
Panasonic SC-DK3 DVD mini system has 5 DVD/CD changer, Dolby Digital Decoder and five speakers (there is no subwoofer, but superwoofers are located in the front speakers).
The inclusion of DVD changer in this mini system helps you avoid dealing with connecting DVD to other components. You also save space.
The system features a five-disc carousel-type DVD changer and 10-bit video DAC (digital-to-analog converter). It also has Panasonic?s Digital Cinema Mode that combines brightness control and picture-noise canceling to provide excellent hi-resolution image.
All the standard DVD player functions, such as multiple-language, multiple-angle, subtitle capabilities, scan/slow playback/still, resume play, and a bookmark function are present.
SC-DK3 provides excellent picture quality and good Dolby Digital sound, but doesn't have a "real" subwoofer. It uses 2 front, center, and 2 surround speakers. Instead of the single stand-alone subwoofer, both front speakers employ separate superwoofers low-frequency sounds.
These superwoofers produce sounds in 55 Hz - 120 Hz range, which is short of subwoofer's ability to produce lower frequency sounds (human ear can hear sounds in approx. 20 Hz - 20,000 Hz for children, and 20 Hz - 17,000 Hz for adults).
The front speakers feature tri-amplified design and have detachable grilles. All speakers have video-shielding that shields magnetic fields from speakers, so you can place them close to your television without worry of interference (the best location of the center channel speaker is on top of your TV).
Since direct-veiw TVs use powerful electromagnetic field to "steer" electrons to the "right" location on the screen and both electromagnetic and electrostatic fields are generated by both TV circuits and speakers, it is important to have shielding to avoid both picture quality loss on TV and sound quality degradation in speakers.
The speakers sound good, but the absence of the subwoofer makes low-end sounds sound less realistic.
SC-DK3 features dual feather-touch cassette decks, AM/FM digitally synthesized tuner with 24 presets, and the CD Manager that simplifies CD-to-tape editing. There is also a Tape Program Search for quick tape access.
There is a programmable timer for ?Record? and ?Play? and sleep timer. The full-functional remote control is easy to use and has good button layout (especially the up/down/left/right buttons) and works well even when not pointed to the system directly. And I like the jog control on the front panel.
It also has six preset equalizer settings (disco, hall, live, heavy, clear, and soft) and a 3-D Space Equalizer, which allows you select from a wide range of patterns.
I think, this system is a good choice for those who want to save space, time and effort. For around $680 you get 5-disc DVD/CD changer, very good mini system with Dolby Digital Decoder, and a full set of speakers (but no real subwoofer). The choice is yours...
